THE EDITORS: The U.S. should add the Taliban-allied Haqqani network to
its list of foreign terrorist organizations. “Labeling the group as
terrorist would bar Americans from supplying the group with money and,
more important, require financial institutions to block all funds in
which it has an interest.” [Read more] And in Europe, THE EDITORS
write, Germany’s fears about the cost of bailing out other countries
are overblown. “History tells us there's no reason to believe that a
deeper fiscal union would entail constant support from Germany to
peripheral countries such as Greece and Spain. Money would flow in all
directions, and the transfers could go a long way toward mitigating

CLIVE CROOK: Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner is right to press for
targeted home-loan forgiveness. “
A partially forgiven loan obviously makes the borrower better off. It
can make the lender better off, too, if the good new loan is worth more
than the about-to-go-bad one it replaces. Crucially, it can be in the
public interest as well, if it reduces the economic externality of
foreclosure blight and stops house prices undershooting.” [Read

PETER ORSZAG: “Wouldn’t it be great if we could design an efficient way
to channel tax subsidies to state and local governments to invest in
infrastructure? Turns out we already have: the Build America Bonds

EDWARD GLAESER: Instead of taxpayers subsidizing parking for
public-housing residents and others, the market should determine
parking supply and price. “The national tax code should stop giving any
deductions for parking expenses. Eliminating the traffic deduction may
have the added benefit of narrowing the U.S. budget deficit by more
than $3 billion a year.” [Read more]
