The minimum wage is not a living wage.

Today, a full-time worker earning the federal minimum wage cannot provide for the basic needs of his or her family.

As you know, Governor O'Malley is leading an effort to increase Maryland's minimum wage to $10.10 per hour -- a raise for over 450,000 Marylanders.

In the Senate, I am working with colleagues to do the same for the rest of the country.

This isn't a right or left issue, it's an American values issue. No U.S. citizen who works hard and plays by the rules should be forced to choose between food and rent, or between medical bills and the phone bill.

Join Governor O'Malley and me and sign our joint-petition calling on Congress to make work pay by raising the minimum wage for all Americans.

Raising the minimum wage is not only the right thing to do for working families, it's good for business, as well.

People with more money make better customers, and a higher wage leads to lower staff turnover and increased productivity. Businesses like the Gap have recently volunteered to raise their minimum pay as they wait for Congressional action.

Lifting families out of poverty also saves some of the long-term draws on taxpayer dollars that go towards funding need-based programs.

It's the right thing to do, and I hope you'll sign our joint-petition calling on Congress to make work pay for all Americans by raising the minimum wage in 2014.

We have every right on our side in this fight: moral, economic, and just plain common sense.

Now it's just a matter of getting others to expand their consciousness and decide that raising the minimum wage for all Americans is good for our families, and our economy.
