Three Ways to Browse the Web Anonymously

So much of your online information and activity is tracked while you surf the web. In order to prevent unwanted peering eyes in your internet cache, there are many things you can do to prevent third parties from keeping track of you without your permission.

Online Proxy Servers

Something that works similarly to a VPN is an online proxy server, which points a url to a proxy server instead of your IP address. That way, a website's tracking cookies can't watch your actions or figure out your geographic location as you surf their site. Traffic is routed through their network of servers, which work together to conceal your location and identity.

Plug in Privacy

If you happen to use a communal computer, or share it with family, then a good solution that works for shared computers is a USB stick called

AllClear Investigator Tamara knows that while the process of moving involves many different aspects - starting with finding a place - identity theft is also something to watch out for.


One type of scam involves false ads for rental properties. The scammer copies an ad posted from a legitimate real estate agency and claims to be the broker but changes the email address. It is usually advertised for what appears to be a great deal.


In responding to the ad, the scammer replies with an application where the applicant would provide personal information such as: name, date of birth, address, Social Security number, and bank account information. Sometimes there's even an application fee required, and the applicant sends that along with the application.


The scammer then replies informing the applicant was approved for the contract (surprise!) and requests the first month's rent and deposit. There is usually a sense of urgency with the whole process, because once that money is sent and the information given, the scammer has won. Not only is the victim out the money, the applicant is now also a victim of identity theft.


There are a number of things that can be done to confirm the legitimacy of an ad. Some of these are:

- Research the company offering the rental property
- Once the company is confirmed as legit, contact them to confirm the broker is associated with the company along with the email address.
- Meet the landlord in person along with taking a tour of the property
- Check with your county recorder - they will be able to verify who owns the property

Tumblr Users: Spam and Scams on the Rise!

Spam, spam, spam. It's everywhere, and no site is safe unless the proper security measures are implemented. Most recently, micro-blogging site -

Tumblr - has become a key target for spam campaigns. Some spam on the website is just pranks, but the point of much of this spam is to generate actual profit for the spammers.


Although spam has been present on Tumblr since its inception, in the past few months there has been a targeted effort from spammers to drive Tumblr traffic to their sites. Hundreds of thousands of people have had their login credentials stolen.


Falling for these traps could mean signing up for monthly billing services, or handing over personal information to third-party marketers. At worst, it could mean loss of control over your Tumblr account and malware/browser plugins could lead to data theft. To avoid falling for these traps, users should do independent research to confirm whether or not the offer is true or a scam.


To better recognize when spam is being sent your way on Tumblr, always check the source to see if it's from an anonymous user or from a friend. Most spam on Tumblr is sent through anonymous spambots to the user's message inbox, so they can be easily recognizable.
