So in preparation for Counsyl going public, they will need to beef up their story to be big and have important societal impact, and have proof in terms of R&D, initiates, etc. that are resourced and up and running supporting that big story. And the envisioned value prop is they are a platform that is wide but not deep and can be the industry platform for other genomics companies that want to be narrow and deep on a particular content area (i.e., ocular, bone, cardio, etc.). Maybe we bring the concept to Counsyl, maybe with some other folks (NIH?) as a project/initiative that we can help seed/lead. We could write that up, come it with a draft concept. For the Counsyl closing dinner on the 21st - I am going to go solo (there is nobody on the planet that could take care of my four kids for a few days without me or Maria at this point J). I am coming back on the redeye at 11:30pm that night, so it will be a quick dinner, but I get home by 9am Saturday. Maybe we go and meet Counsyl at their offices on Thursday the 20th - and we could share the project idea and see what we can get going? I think "going direct" to Counsyl would be the approach that would be most impactful. And there is something to us having a "med-tech" focus - with Counsyl, Medabiota, your role at WFP, Care, One, relationship with StartUp Health - we could be a very credible med-tech platform and raise a $1B to pursue - much bigger and longer term and important than consumer internet stuff! I don't know enough to know what Counsyl has the ability to do, but it certainly seems like they would have a jump on identifying the first genetic disorders that could benefit from Crispr genomic manipulation. And yes you are right regarding cancer- the holy grail is finding the key to halting the cancer cells unfettered mutation in the body. Current therapies all (except for melanoma now) employ the shotgun (radiation/ chemo) approach. The treatment is more often the cause of death than the cancer itself. Anyway, I just find it fascinating on so many levels and believe that it is truly the next frontier. Did you read the Sunday Times Magazine article on bringing extinct species back to life ala Jurassic Park. It's no longer science fiction it is real and it's doable now at a relatively reasonable cost. I truly believe that the collision of the exponential advances in computing power and the understanding of the human genome will radically alter the way we live within our lifetimes. R. Huge impact to health care for chronic conditions - maybe they all get cured? I bet stopping cancer cells from replicating is a huge focus of this technology, especially for pancreatic which is untreatable at this point. Could be the next Pharma - an R&D IP play, huge capital infusion, develop techniques and then license a them for clinical uses. And then protecting and marketing the IP to get the ROI on the R&D. Family Offices really like exposure to these type of opportunities - patient capital long term looking, but big societal impact (all of Howard Hughes fortune is in a foundation only investing in health/life science innovation). Also Goldman can take this to their clients as they've done with Counsyl. Should Counsyl start an effort to extend their platform to be a tool for this field of genomics? Could start as a thought leadership / prototype effort and then evolve to their next product or platform extension. -------------------- Neil Callahan Rosemont Seneca 917-945-9516 On Mar 5, 2014, at 8:17 AM, Hunter Biden <hbiden@rosemontseneca.com> wrote: Genome engineering will not only fundamentally change the way we live- it will change the way we think about life and death.
