Tuesday - March 18, 2014 From the School THIS WEEK'S QUERY How can we incorporate Quaker values into Minimester? NOTES FROM SALLY Thanks for your quick response to the information about the changed situation on 37th Street. One parent made a good suggestion that some already are using and I thought I would pass along: students can walk to either Quebec Street or to Tilden and meet parents – there is often plenty of parking available there. Just remind them that if something comes up and their ride does not arrive when they expect it to, they should come back to Middle School to get help, not stay on the corner! Congratulations to 8th grader Kevin Jiang, whose performance at the American Mathematics Competition qualified him to take the American Invitational Mathematics Examination. Due to the level of difficulty of the competition, it is rare for a middle schooler to qualify for the prestigious national exam, so his accomplishment is quite impressive. I hope we’re heading back to school as you read this on Tuesday morning, and that we are finished with snow for the year! I hope everyone has a terrific Minimester and a great spring break! MORE RESULTS FROM THE STATE MATH COUNTS COMPETITION SFS Mathletes Sweep 7th – 10th Place Spots! After the last Tuesday letter was published, we learned that at the State Math Counts Competition, the following Sidwell Friends mathletes also placed among the top ten individuals in DC: 7th grader Ariana Warden (7th place), 8th grader Ella Stark (8th place), 7th grader Lauren Adler (9th place), and 8th grader Isabel Kirsch (10th place). Congratulations to all of them for their impressive accomplishments! QUAKER QUOTE "If fighting is inconsistent with an ideal society, then fighting will not bring the ideal society. A spiritual result is produced by spiritual means and a material result by material means. If war is evil, as almost everyone admits, then it can not be the right way to produce a good result."
