Tuesday - March 11, 2014 From the School THIS WEEK'S QUERY How do we put aside stereotypes when meeting someone new? NOTES FROM SALLY The assembly this week is a screening of the film “Bag It” and a discussion with the actor/narrator. The assembly will begin at 2:15p in the Meeting Room – please note a different time and location. Parents are always welcome! Minimester is next week! All parents of students in local programs should see a permission form and schedule from the chaperones this week. Please note that many programs will be outside for part of the day, so it’s a good week to keep a particular eye on the weather forecast and remind students to dress accordingly. Also, bag lunches will not include a drink, so all students should have a water bottle with them for the week. Congratulations to the 6th grade chorus and director Hilary Hogan for a lovely performance as part of the Children’s Choral Festival at the National Cathedral last week! On Saturday, March 8th, 6th graders Etan Basser and Ethan Isaacson, 7th graders Lauren Adler, Ariana Warden, Mitchell Jubeir, and Nathan Shapiro, and 8th graders Kevin Jiang, Isabel Kirsch, and Ella Stark participated in the State Math Counts Competition. Ella, Kevin, Nathan and Mitchell led Sidwell Friends to the 1st Place Team trophy for the third straight year. Kevin and Mitchell won 2nd and 3rd place, respectively, in the Individual Competition, and as a result they each won a free trip to Disney World to help represent the District of Columbia in the National Math Counts Competition in May. They and two other students from DC will be coached at the National Competition by Math Counts coach Andrew Callard. Congratulations to our very talented mathletes! 8th grade parents: The Conversations with Sally postponed from last week will be held on Tuesday morning, April 8th. We are going to use the Rosenberg Theater in the arts center – the old Quaker Meeting Room. See you at 8:00a that morning! We welcome our Interim Academic Technology Coordinator, Tracie York. Tracie will begin working with 5th grade classes this week and will be in full swing when we get back from spring break. Save the Date: the Middle School PA Diversity Committee has two great speakers in store for the community this spring! On Thursday, April 17th, NPR correspondent Michelle Norris will be speaking about her Race Card project. And visiting on Tuesday evening, May 6th is Congressman John Lewis. More will be coming about both of these events, but do get them on your calendar! CHORAL MUSIC NOTES Boys Ensemble meets Wednesday before school and during 7/8 rehearsal period. Girls Ensemble meets Wednesday after school from 3:30 to 5pm. (Please note the earlier release time.) 6th Grade Ensemble meets Wednesday during 5/6 rehearsal period. PA Announcements FROM SFS MIDDLE SCHOOL WELCOMING COMMITTEE If you are interested in hosting a summer potluck or hangout for rising 6th or 7th grade families, please contact MS Welcoming Clerks Liz Baldick or Maggie Prieto. QUAKER QUOTE “Now, Friends, deal plainly with yourselves, and let the eternal Light search you, and try you, for the good of your souls. For this will deal plainly with you. It will rip you up, and lay you open, and make all manifest which lodges in you; the secret subtlety of the enemy of your souls, this eternal searcher and trier will make manifest. Therefore all to this come, and by this be searched, and judged, and led and guided. For to this you must stand or fall.” ~ Margaret Fell, 1614-1702 The Parents Association newsletters are a forum for communication among parents and provide announcements concerning School or PA events or information related to a School or PA event. MS newsletter submissions should be sent to PA.MSnewsletter@sidwell.edu.
