> April 4: One of the most important things Martin Luther King taught and practiced was the idea of nonviolence. I believe my drinking was at a level that could be characterized as a form of self-inflicted violence.
> This is April, the 4th month of the year;
> • The 4th Tradition: Each group should be autonomous except in matters affecting other groups or A.A. as a whole.
> • The 4th Step: Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
> • The 4th Promise: We will comprehend the word serenity and we will know peace.

> A.A. Thought for the Day
>
> When I came into A.A., I found men and women who had been through the same things I had been through. But now they were thinking more about how they could help others than they were about themselves. They were a lot more unselfish than I ever was. By coming to meetings and associating with them, I began to think a little less about myself and a little more about other people. I also learned that I didn't have to depend on myself alone to get out of the mess I was in. I could get a greater strength than my own. Am I now depending less on myself and more on God?

> You cannot help others unless you understand the person you are trying to help. To understand the problems and temptations of others, you must have been through them yourself. You must do all you can to understand others. You must study their backgrounds, their likes and dislikes, their reactions and their prejudices. When you see their weaknesses, do not confront the person with them. Share your own weaknesses, sins, and temptations and let other people find their own convictions.

> I pray that I may serve as a channel for God's power to come into the lives of others. I pray that I may try to understand them.

> The following is Excerpt No. 183 from As Bill Sees It : “A Viewer With Alarm”
>
> I went through several fruitless years in a state called "viewing with alarm for the good of the movement". I thought it was up to me to be always "correcting conditions". Seldom had anybody been able to tell me what I ought to do & nobody had ever succeeded in effectively telling me what I must do. I had to learn the hard way out of my own experience.
> When setting out to "check others", I found myself often motivated by fear of what they were doing, self-righteousness & even downright intolerance. Consequently, I seldom succeeded in correcting anything. I just raised barriers of resentment that cut off any suggestion, example, understanding, or love.
> letter 1945
>
> A.A.s often say, "Our leaders do not drive by mandate; they lead by example". If we would favorably affect others, we ourselves need to practice what we preach - & forget the "preaching" too. The quiet good example speaks for itself.
