Tuesday - April 24, 2012 From the School This Week's Query How do we keep our planet safe while still using the resources we need? Notes from Sally Assembly: Upper School Instrumental Ensembles All Middle School parents are invited to join us for Meeting for Worship on Thursday morning in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room from 8:10 – 8:40. After Meeting for Worship, I will give a short talk about Quakerism in Middle School. Light refreshments will be served. We hope to see you there! We have spectacular news about the Middle School! U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, together with White House Council on Environmental Quality Chair Nancy Sutley and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson, announced today that the SFS Middle School is among 78 schools named U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools. U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools (ED-GRS) is a federal recognition program that began in September 2011. Honored schools exercise a comprehensive approach to creating “green” environments through reducing environmental impact, promoting health, and ensuring a high-quality environmental and outdoor education to prepare students with the 21st century skills and sustainability concepts needed in the growing global economy. Needless to say, we are very proud to have received this honor! We were delighted to have Dr. Beth Shapiro speak to our Middle School students last Thursday under the sponsorship of the USA Science and Engineering Festival. A reminder that the festival will take place this weekend at the Convention Center. For more information, go to www.usasciencefestival.org. On Friday, April 20th, over 50 of our middle school students participated in the National Day of Silence. For students, their silence was a serious commitment, running from 7am until 3pm. Started in 1996 at the University of Virginia, the Day of Silence is a day when students nationwide take a vow of silence to bring attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in their schools. In 2008, students at more than 8,000 middle schools, high schools, colleges and universities participated. This year there was the added option of registering as an ally, and more than 50 additional students participated in this capacity. Congratulations to the 6th, 7th and 8th grade students who participated in the third and final math meet of the year for area independent schools. Sidwell Friends won the meet, edging out St. Albans with a perfect team score. 7th Graders Amal Mattoo, Luke Oh, Alan Zhang, Matty Cheng, and Jordan Chernof, and 8th graders Sammy Singer and David Hauge were high scorers. 6th grader Carrera Chao won the Sonnet Contest at the Folger Shakespeare Library for grades 3-6. She has won a complete collection of the Folger Edition of Shakespeare’s plays. 6th grader Ananya Kapur won Second Place in the Sonnet Contest at the Folger Shakespeare Library for grades 3-6. She has won a Folger Edition of Shakespeare’s sonnets. Ananya also won Scope Magazine’s “Rip Van Winkle” writing contest. And 6th graders Matthew Lobel and Julian Dixon won Honorable Mention for the 2012 Young Playwrights Inc. National Playwriting Competition. They received a certificate and a written evaluation of their play, written by a theater professional. Our 8th grade Latin students recently took the National Latin Exam and achieved very strong results! There were 16 students with Summa Cum Laude Certificates and Gold Medals: Rex Tercek, Justin Lobe, Sandy Katz, LinDon Harris, William Choi, Tucker Ward, Taylor Knibb, Jamie Gleklen, Sammy Singer, Olivia Nash, Alex DiMeglio, Avery Schonberger, Guilia Neaher, Anna Rumer, Ben Reisner, David Hauge There were 11 students with Maxima Cum Laude Certificates and Silver Medals: Tessa Reagan, Teyana Daley, Megan Powell, Katie Johnson, Benjamin Lee, Michael Ryan, Gyorgy Brevnov, Ted Hefter, Atessa Farzami, Raina Weinstein, Emanuele Lusso And there were 4 students with Magna Cum Laude Certificates: Anna McClean, Philippe Sanchez, Nicholas Suardi-Boitel, Micah Campbell-Smith. Congratulations to all! Thank you to everyone who donated their books and their time to the Middle School Book Fair. This year’s coordination efforts were led by Donna Osborn and Felix Sanchez. The Fair was a smashing success! Congratulations to 8th grade science teacher Dave Wood, who has been named one of six recipients of the Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship of the National Geographic Society! Please support the environment and the health of our community by turning off your car. No cell phone usage (hands-free or not) while driving on campus. Model responsible driving behavior for our students. Pull forward to drop-off and pick-up students, and as far to the right as possible, so other cars can easily pass on the left. Direct students to enter and exit vehicles on the curb side only. Do not wait in the pick-up/drop-off lane; park in a space. Do not double park or block key intersections. Use caution when exiting by Post Office. This drive is shared by the Post Office and student walkers, who are often distracted If you need to wait for your student, find a spot in the garage, on a nearby street or along Zartman Circle. Use Zartman Circle for drop-off and pick-up. Lower School parents meeting the bus are encouraged to use lower level parking. The lower level provides easy access to the pickup point to the Lower School bus by the north stairwell. Many thanks for doing your part to keep our community safe. Questions or Comments, please contact Jeanne Gemmell at gemmellj@sidwell.edu. PA Announcements Sorry, no news is available at this time. Our way of worship evokes from deep within us at once an affirmation and a celebration, an affirmation of the reality of that Light which illumines the spiritual longing of humanity, and a celebration of the continual resurrection within us of the springs of hope and love; a sense that each of us is, if we will, a channel for a power that is both within and beyond us."
