Ever since the publication of his bestselling </span><em style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 13px;">Irrational Exu=erance </em><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-siz=: 13px;">in 2000, which discussed speculative bubbles and predicted the te=h stock meltdown of 2000-2002, and </span><em style="font-family: 'book =ntiqua', palatino; font-size: 13px;">Subprime Solution: How the Global Cri=is Happened and What to Do about It</em><span style="font-family: 'book =ntiqua', palatino; font-size: 13px;">, he has become a leading figure in t=e fields of finance and investments. He also co-developed the Case-Sh</spa=><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 13px;">i=ler Home Price Index, now published by Standard & Poor’s, which has ome the standard for tracking home sales and prices.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', =alatino; font-size: 13px;">In </span><em style="font-family: 'book antiq=a', palatino; font-size: 13px;">Finance and the Good Society</em><span sty=e="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 13px;">, Professor =hiller argues that while many have damned the finance industry for rampant=self-interest and a tendency to prey on people's flawed thinking for its o=n benefit, it should be overhauled to make sure finance serves the greater=good. The key he says is to democratize finance--giving the rest of us acc=ss to the tools and techniques that rich folks have used for decades to ra=se capital and protect themselves from risk. In his book, Professor Shille= comes across as pragmatic as well as visionary, explaining how much finan=ial capitalism has done for society and how much more it could do if harne=sed for the common good. </span></p>
<span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino; font-size: 13px;">Rob=rt Shiller received his B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1967 and h=s Ph.D. from M.I.T. in 1972. He has been a Yale professor since 1982. Unti= recently he was the Arthur M. Okun Professor of Economics, but has just b=en named Sterling Professor of Economics at Yale by outgoing President Ric=ard Levin.</span>
