people in a downturn – work sharing, which is a good deal for employees and
employers alike. “For workers, it means avoiding the despair of joblessness.
For employers, it means that when weak demand next hits, it will be easier
to hang on to the investments they have made in finding, hiring and training

_RAMESH PONNURU_: “Our destiny is going to be shaped by demography in ways
we may not expect.” Falling birthrates are already reshaping Japan. Similar
trends in European nations will influence their power along with America’s
position in the world, says demographer Nicholas Eberstadt. He concludes:
"We might want to have some additional new friends and allies in the world."

_JEFFREY GOLDBERG_: Historian Benzion Netanyahu, who died on Monday, had a
powerful influence on his son. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "is
a man very much shaped by his father, and his father’s worldview has helped
shape the Israel of today. . . . Israel’s security depends in part on
Benzion Netanyahu-style vigilance and militancy. But it also depends on
recognizing that the Jews of today are not the Jews of 1938, and that Jewish

_PETER VIKTOR KUNZ_: Why is the whole world out to get the Swiss? A recent
Swiss court decision to block Credit Suisse Group AG from handing over data
to the IRS has inflamed the global "tax wars" again. “Surely it's time for
other governments to relax their continued assault on the Swiss banking
industry and accept that privacy is not a crime.” [Link]
