Financial problems are the single biggest threat to charter school sustainability. And “we’ve always done it this way” is not a GASB-compliant fiscal policy.

Consult our free downloadable Recommended Checklist of Financial Responsibilities <http://pages.reachthehighbar.com/rs/thehighbar/images/FinancialRolesandResponsibilities.pdf> to help make sure the worst doesn’t happen to your school.
Dear R. Hunter,

All across America, charter school staffers and board members are staring at spreadsheets deep into the night to hammer out budgets for 2013/14. Thankfully, a majority of those budgets will prove to be thorough, well thought-out and accurate documents reflecting the best principles of public accounting.

But what if yours doesn’t? Would you know? Do the members of your finance committee have things under control? Do you even HAVE a finance committee?

As board members, it’s not up to you to manage the day-to-day finances, but it IS your job to conduct effective fiscal oversight, and to ensure the long-term financial viability of the organization.

But don’t worry; we’re here to help.

Starting with a free download <http://pages.reachthehighbar.com/rs/thehighbar/images/FinancialRolesandResponsibilities.pdf> <http://pages.reachthehighbar.com/rs/thehighbar/images/FinancialRolesandResponsibilities.pdf> of a checklist we’ve created with our colleagues at Charter School Business Management. It methodically charts out the overarching financial responsibilities of your school, plus the specific accounting, review, approval and communication tasks of:

- The full Board of Trustees
- The Finance Committee
- The school’s leadership team
- The school’s business manager
