Like Reshma, I'm a first generation American. My parents were immigrants from Jamaica. I grew up in the Bronx, went to public school in the Bronx, and watched my parents work hard so I could have a shot at a better life.

My story is Reshma's story. It's the New York story.

While at the White House, I directed minority business outreach. Through that work, Reshma and I co-created the The White House Urban Entrepreneurship Summit series. This initiative helped small businesses and students learn how to find the resources they need to run successful businesses and create jobs in their communities.

My nephew Dwight met Reshma at the Monroe College Urban Entrepreneurship Summit. His eyes lit up when Reshma talked to him about computers and engineering.

As the former Deputy Public Advocate, and her work with Girls Who Code, Reshma is a fierce advocate for jobs and education. She worked hard to build the pipeline of opportunity for kids- like my nephew Dwight- as they prepare for 21st century jobs in technology and engineering.

I came home to New York because Reshma believed in me, and I believe in her because she's lived out these words so well:

"We are the ones we've been waiting for."

Each one of us needs to take an action, whether large or small, if we want to see change in our neighborhoods and our city. By getting involved in this campaign, you can be part of the movement to move New York forward.
