Dear Friend,

People from all walks of life have reached out via email, phone, Facebook and Twitter, asking how they can help as I move toward a run for the United States Senate.

In an age of deep skepticism about our government in Washington, I want to first say thank you. You believe, like I do, that we can and must as a country do better. It has become so easy to give into the cynicism that has come to characterize our politics. But for those who seek change and progress, surrendering to cynicism is unacceptable.

As mayor of Newark, I’ve spent the last seven years confronting that same kind of cynicism and taking on challenges people told me could not be fixed. Now seven years later, the skeptics have been proven wrong – where cynicism once thrived, hope now flourishes. Crime is down. Communities are stronger. Jobs are surging back. Newark has turned a corner and is charging ahead.

But I didn’t do it alone. As Martin Luther King said, “Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability.” Change must be worked for by many committed hearts who refuse to accept what is and always work for what can be.

It is with this confidence, forged from practical experience that I now look toward the United States Senate. I know that now and in the years ahead, with other committed people, we can make a dramatic difference.

This journey of promise begins with a first step. I hope you will help me now, at the very beginning.
