Happy Easter from the School of Foreign Service! ------------------------------------------------------------ ** The Predicament of Pluralism Featuring Steven Knapp ------------------------------------------------------------ Tuesday, April 2: There is a growing dissatisfaction with the rigid dichotomies that dominate contemporary debates around religion, philosophy and science. Increasingly pluralistic societies and secular universities are recognizing that matters of faith are complex, that doubt is endemic to belief, and that dialogue is indispensable. Dr. Steven Knapp, president and professor of English at George Washington University, will lead a discussion on issues surrounding pluralistic and secular approaches to religion and science, in relation to his recent book, The Predicament of Belief: Science, Philosophy, and Faith. Sponsored by the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace and World Affairs. 12pm, Berkley Center. Click here to RSVP. (http://berkleycenter.georgetown.edu/events/the-predicament-of-pluralism-a-discussion-with-gwu-president-steven-knapp?utm_source=Edmund+A.+Walsh+School+of+Foreign+Service&utm_campaign=8a5df32844-Week_in_Preview_3_21_20133_21_2013&utm_medium=email) ** Europe: What Is Left, What Is Right Today ------------------------------------------------------------ Tuesday, April 2: Featuring Gérard Grunberg, the former director of the political science post-graduate seminar at Sciences Po in Paris (1996-2004). He has taught as a visiting professor at many universities abroad, including NYU and Oxford. Grunberg is an internationally recognized authority on political behavior and value systems, the French and European socialist parties and public opinion. Sponsored by the BMW Center for German and European Studies. 12pm, CCAS Boardroom (ICC 241). Click here to RSVP. She is an international researcher at the Center for Latin American Studies at Georgetown University. Her research is on the work and life of the North American historian Richard Morse (1922-2001). Sponsored by the Center for Latin American Studies. 5:30pm, ICC 462. Click here to RSVP. (http://latinamericaviewedbynorthamericans.eventbrite.com/?utm_source=Edmund+A.+Walsh+School+of+Foreign+Service&utm_campaign=8a5df32844-Week_in_Preview_3_21_20133_21_2013&utm_medium=email) ** Refiguring the Commons in Morocco's New Enclosures ------------------------------------------------------------ Tuesday, April 2: Featuring Karen Rignall, who will explore the implications of a large-scale solar energy project for understanding the role of the commons in contemporary struggles over sovereignty in southern Morocco. Public resistance to the state's acquisition of land for the high-profile project illustrates the competing visions of sovereignty held by the state and local residents. Dr. Rignall traces the history of governance in Morocco's collectively owned lands to contextualize current movements to privatize those lands. The sometimes surprising political alignments that emerge challenge easy associations of the commons as inherently egalitarian and the private as a site of neoliberal exclusion. Sponsored by the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies. 6pm, ICC 241. Click here to RSVP. (http://karenrignall.eventbrite.com/?utm_source=Edmund+A.+Walsh+School+of+Foreign+Service&utm_campaign=8a5df32844-Week_in_Preview_3_21_20133_21_2013&utm_medium=email) ** Book Talk: Globalization and the Cultures of Business in Africa, Scott Taylor ------------------------------------------------------------ Wednesday, April 3: Can Africa develop businesses beyond the extractive or agricultural sectors? What would it take for Africa to play a major role in global business? By focusing on recent changes, Scott D. Taylor demonstrates how Africa’s business culture is marked by an unprecedented receptivity to private enterprise. Challenging persistent stereotypes about crony capitalism and the lack of development, Taylor reveals a long and dynamic history of business in Africa. He shows how a hospitable climate for business has been spurred by institutional change, globalization and political and economic reform. Sponsored by the African Studies program. 12pm, ICC 450. Click here to RSVP. The question of charisma in religious figures has become critical in our age because of the rise of modern media that produces overnight celebrities. Many are moved by them and convinced of their sincerity. Others dismiss them as profiteers. Do they matter, and if so, how do they matter? Sponsored by the Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding. 12:15pm, ICC 270. Click here to RSVP. (http://celebrityevangelists.eventbrite.com/?utm_source=Edmund+A.+Walsh+School+of+Foreign+Service&utm_campaign=8a5df32844-Week_in_Preview_3_21_20133_21_2013&utm_medium=email) ** The Deepening of Corruption in China ------------------------------------------------------------ Wednesday, April 3: Featuring Andrew Wedeman, professor of political science at Georgia State University. Are wealth and politics becoming more intricately intertwined in China? The paper examines the extent to which people identified as China's wealth elite have also been members of the party congress, the National Peoples Congress or the Chinese Peoples Political Consultative Conference. It also looks at the extent to which members of the latter two institutions have 'day jobs' in the business sector. Sponsored by the Asian Studies Program and the Department of Government. 12:15pm, ICC 302P. Click here to RSVP. (http://wedeman.eventbrite.com/?utm_source=Edmund+A.+Walsh+School+of+Foreign+Service&utm_campaign=8a5df32844-Week_in_Preview_3_21_20133_21_2013&utm_medium=email) ** Colonial Autonomy: A Liberal Alternative in Cuban Post-Slavery Society ------------------------------------------------------------ Wednesday, April 3: Featuring Delphine Sappez, currently a visiting researcher at the BMW Center for German and European Studies. She holds an M.A. in Iberian and Ibero-American Studies from the University of Franche-Comté (France) and is completing her Ph.D. in history and contemporary studies at the University Jaume I of Castellón (Spain).
