Cole

Assistant Chief of Information (OI-8), Requirements, Policy & Professional Development

703-695-0911

Disclaimer: Training opportunities are provided for informational purposes only. References to opportunities offered by organizations outside DoD do not imply endorsement of those organizations. Some training opportunities may require a fee.

*************************************************************************************

1. SYMPOSIUM ADVANCED PLANNING. As previously announced by RDML Cutler, we are working toward having a PA/VI Training Symposium next spring. You can help by telling us what you want to learn, hear and talk about, what training you can lead or presentations you can give, and your suggestions for guest speakers. Send ideas to Mr. Jeff Elliott (jeff.elliott@navy.mil / 703-692-4754) and LCDR Steve Thompson (steven.thompson@navy.mil / 703-695-1888).

2. WHAT’S THE NAVY’S POLICY ON THAT? Don’t guess. Open the PA/VI Resources Available for Download attachment. It lists where to look for information across the entire sphere of PA/VI. For example, the “PA/VI Megafile” is your one-stop source for DoD and Navy instructions on Public Affairs and Visual Information in a single, searchable pdf file. You’ll also find MC Rate Training Manuals, Navy Public Affairs Guides, Navy Style Guides and more. Download the zip file to your desktop from http://imagery.navy.mil/Policyandguidance.html.

3. SHARE THE WEALTH – UPCOMING PRSA AND IABC CONFERENCES. The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) International Conference is 11-14 October in Washington, D.C., and the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) has a pair of regional conferences in October, too. The IABC Southern Region Conference is 15-17 October in Austin, Tex., and the Heritage Region Annual Conference is 19-21 October in Providence, R.I. These are wonderful opportunities to learn, grow and build your network of communication professionals beyond the military – always a good source of different ideas and perspectives. If you are attending either of these or other similar events in the future, share what you learned with others around you and tell us about it, too, so we can share it even more widely. There might be some good ideas for the Symposium.

4. WHY DO WE HAVE AWARDS PROGRAMS? The obvious answer is we want to recognize the very best work performed by our people in the PA/VI community. The less obvious answer is competition drives us to achieve things we never thought possible. The least obvious answer is to find out if we’re teaching, equipping and leading ourselves to attain excellence. Awards are part of the feedback loop. Later this year we will call for Russell Egnor Navy Media Awards and Thompson-Ravitz Public Affairs Awards entries. Don’t wait until the end of 2014 to think about entering. If you haven’t had it in mind since 1 January, start now.

5. DINFOS NEWS.

A. VISUAL INFORMATION MANGEMENT COURSE – DISTANCE LEARNING. The DINFOS courses available via distance learning now include VIM. VIM-DL is six weeks online delivering the same training as the two week in-residence version.

B. JQO POINTS AWARDED FOR ATTENDING JEPAC. Officers can now receive 1.5 Joint Qualified Officer (JQO) points for attending the Joint Expeditionary Public Affairs Course (JEPAC) at DINFOS. Officers need at least 18 points and completion of JPME Phase I to be eligible for Level II Joint Officer Qualification. For additional information on the JOM/JQS program, please visit the following link: https://wss.apan.org/s/JSOFUN/jom_jqs/SitePages/JQS%20Introduction.aspx

C. NEW POC FOR ENROLLING IN PAQC-ADL, BPASC AND IPASC. To enroll in the Public Affairs Qualification Course-Advanced Distributed Learning (PAQC-ADL), Basic Public Affairs Specialist Course (BPASC), or Intermediate Public Affairs Specialist Course (IPASC), contact LCDR Heather Paynter at heather.paynter@navy.mil, 703-614-4288 or 703-601-0601. She is the new Navy Reserve Public Affairs Operational Support Officer and Detailer at CHINFO

6. WHY SHOULD THE BOSS LISTEN TO YOU? “Giving advice is an art that starts where the boss is and where he or she has to go.” James Lukaszewski’s Three Minute Drill is a structured, six-step process to help make strategic recommendations. You should be able to accomplish these tasks in 450 words or less, approximately three minutes.

-- Describe the situation

-- Provide analysis and identify assumptions

-- State the goal to provide focus

-- List at least three options to address the situation

-- Be prepared to make a recommendation

-- Justify the need for a decision

7. TWO KEY QUALITIES OF GREAT MENTORS. On “Superperformance.com,” Duncan Brodie shares his thoughts about “Key Qualities of Great Mentors.” They are Enthusiasm, Approachable, Useful Experience, Hold Confidentiality and Commitment. While all five were cited in the responses to our mentoring survey at the end of 2012, two of them were the biggest concerns.

Approachable - “If you want to mentor, you need to be someone who is approachable. A mentor who is intimidating, unable to build rapport and put people at ease will not be a huge success. They may have great knowledge, experience and skills but if they are not approachable, this counts for nothing.”

Hold Confidentiality – “Successful mentoring will get into some significant issues, so the mentor will need to be able to hold confidentiality. The individual being mentored needs to be assured 100% that anything that is discussed during mentoring session's stays confidential.”

8. FY15 GMT REQUIREMENTS. The FY15 General Military Training (GMT) requirements were announced in NAVADMIN 202/14 on 2 September. There are seven Category 1 topics, which must be face-to-face training led by and E-7 or senior. There are 12 Category 2 GMT mandatory requirements, which may be completed online or in an instructor-led setting. Additional details are available on Navy Knowledge Online.

9.
