****************************************************************************** THE CHICAGO COUNCIL ON GLOBAL AFFAIRS http://www.thechicagocouncil.org ****************************************************************************** February 19, 2014 Dear Colleagues, With the Farm Bill’s passage, the World Economic Forum’s dialogue about food security-related risks [ http://globalfoodforthought.typepad.com/global-food-for-thought/2014/02/global-risk-2014-report-4-of-the-top-10-global-risks-are-linked-to-climate-change.html ] , and President Obama’s recent announcement [ http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2014/01/21/statement-press-secretary-announcing-us-africa-leaders-summit ] of a summit with African leaders to discuss trade and development, the question of how to feed the world nutritiously and sustainably is front and center in the national and international debate. Here are highlights of The Chicago Council’s work on these important issues: - We are pleased to welcome new members [ http://www.thechicagocouncil.org/files/Global_Agricultural_Development_Initiative/About_the_Initiative/Leadership/files/Global_Agriculture/About_the_Initiative/Leadership.aspx ] of the Global Agricultural Development Advisory Group, cochaired by Dan Glickman, former US Secretary of Agriculture, and Doug Bereuter, President Emeritus, The Asia Foundation . We are grateful to this bipartisan and cross-sector group of experts for its guidance on our global food security research agenda, events, and studies. - Ashleigh Black [ http://www.thechicagocouncil.org/files/About_Us/Staff_Bios/Ashleigh_Black.aspx ] has joined us as director of our DC activities . We have benefited from partnering with many DC-based organizations to raise awareness and provide insights about the importance of US action on agricultural development. Ashleigh will continue those efforts and help us engage leaders from the administration and Congress in dialogues and studies. - We are gearing up for our annual Global Food Security Symposium [ http://www.thechicagocouncil.org/files/Global_Agricultural_Development_Initiative/files/Global_Agriculture/Initiative_Events/Global_Food_Security_Symposium_2014.aspx ] on May 22 in Washington, DC . It will focus on advancing global food security in the face of weather volatility, resource scarcity, and climate change. We’ll also release a major Chicago Council report on these topics at the event. - Check out the highlight video from our 2013 symposium here [ http://www.thechicagocouncil.org/files/Global_Agriculture/Initiative_Events/Symposium.aspx ] . - We’re pleased to host a group of outstanding graduate and undergraduate students interested in pursuing careers in food security in our Next Generation Delegation. Further details, including information on how to apply can be found here [ http://www.thechicagocouncil.org/files/Global_Agricultural_Development_Initiative/files/Global_Agriculture/2014_Next_Generation_Delegation.aspx ] . - Chicago Council Senior Fellow Roger Thurow is working on a new book . He is tracking women and their children in India, Uganda, Guatemala, and the United States (on the south side of Chicago) to get a clearer understanding of how income levels; occupations; and availability of nutritious food, sanitation, clean water, and health care influence a woman’s ability to make nutritious choices in the 1,000 day window between the start of pregnancy and her child’s first two years. Follow Roger at outrageandinspire.org [ http://www.outrageandinspire.org ] and @RogerThurow [ https://twitter.com/RogerThurow ] . - As a follow-up to the Council’s studies, Agricultural Innovation: The US in a Changing Global Landscape [ http://www.thechicagocouncil.org/files/Studies_Publications/TaskForcesandStudies/GADI/Agriculture_Innovations_and_Investments_Critical_to_Meeting_Future_Food_Demand.aspx ] , and Advancing Global Food Security: The Power of Science, Trade, and Business [ http://www.thechicagocouncil.org/files/Studies_Publications/TaskForcesandStudies/GADI/2013_Advancing_Global_Food_Security.aspx ] (released spring 2013), we are convening expert roundtables on agricultural research . Highlights include: - University of Illinois President Robert Easter chaired a session on reinventing the US agricultural research, education, and extension system to meet global challenges. - Catherine Woteki, Undersecretary for Research, Education, and Extension and Chief Scientist, US Department of Agriculture led a roundtable on opportunities for international coordination in agriculture and food research. - Ray Goldberg, George M. Moffett Professor of Agriculture and Business, Emeritus, Harvard Business School chaired a discussion on the challenges to scaling up innovations in developing country agrifood systems. - Later this month, Cynthia Rosenzweig, Senior Research Scientist, NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies will lead a session on promoting resilience in the face of weather volatility and climate change. - In March, Digital Green CEO Rikin Gandhi will chair a roundtable to discuss opportunities to leverage the digital revolution to advance food and nutrition security in emerging economies. - Chicago Council events on global food security and development provide a public forum in Chicago for discussing these important issues . The Council hosts over 150 programs annually on a full range of topics related to global affairs. As agriculture, food, and development issues have grown more important in foreign policy, we facilitate conversations on these topics. Highlights include: - Howard G. Buffett and Howard W. Buffett [ http://www.thechicagocouncil.org/Files/Event/FY14_Events/10_October/40_Chances__Finding_Hope_in_a_Hungry_World.aspx ] discussed with Dan Glickman their new book, 40 Chances: Finding Hope in a Hungry World. - CSIS President John Hamre, Katherine Pickus of Abbott Laboratories, and Hyatt Hotels Chairman Thomas Pritzker [ http://www.thechicagocouncil.org/files/Event/FY14_Events/01_January/The_Promise_of_Global_Prosperity_.aspx ] discussed the opportunity to leverage multinational businesses to advance development.
