GIRLS' VARSITY VOLLEYBALL COMMUNITY SERVICE ACTIVITY OCT 11: GLEANING AT MILLER FARMS QUALITY OF COMMUNITY LIFE COMMITTEE Other QUAKER QUOTES News Around the School US NEWS MS NEWS LS NEWS Principal's Letter MESSAGE FROM MAMADOU Friends, I continue to be in awe of our incredibly thoughtful students. Whether they are cheering on their friends on the playing fields or simply enjoying each other’s company in the hallways or the Fox Den, we see a student body that cares deeply for one another. This past week proved somewhat challenging with two unexpected emergency incidents. In both instances, law enforcement officials determined that the campus was safe. The students comported themselves with maturity and remained calm as they followed the instructions given to them. I want to assure you that the School’s administration takes emergency events and procedures with the utmost seriousness, and student safety is our first priority. On Tuesday, the Black Student Union (BSU) partnered with the Quaker Life Committee (QLC) to cosponsor an informal town-hall discussion about the shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. Students who shared their thoughts spoke from the heart and called for greater societal awareness and for justice. The gathering was an incredibly diverse one, inspiring one student to express how heartened he felt that our community is one that sees racial injustice as a problem that all members of our community must address. I am deeply appreciative of the BSU and QLC leadership for sponsoring this forum for thoughtful discussion and reflection. On Wednesday, Upper School students had the opportunity to work with Arthur Larrabee, a respected Quaker educator, to learn more about Quaker decision-making processes. Arthur explained the approach that Quakers use to voice different viewpoints, to hear the varying positions being shared, and to reach a sense of unity and form a decision that the community as a whole can stand behind. In addition to working with our student leadership to train them further in this important process, Arthur will conduct a workshop for 9th graders on Quaker decision making on October 15 as part of our Quaker Education Program. Also on October 15, while 10th and 11th graders take the PSAT, 9th graders will spend the day rotating through four different workshops focused on the following topics: Quaker Activism, Quaker Decision Making, Service, and Spirituality. The morning grade-level parent conversations with the Upper School administration continue to be informative and helpful in giving me greater insight into the parent perspective. I look forward to seeing more of you at the 9th grade parent conversation on October 9, and the 11th grade parent conversation on October 23. Thursday, October 16, from 9:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. (SFS community only) Friday, October 17, from 9:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. (Open to the public) Saturday, October 18, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Open to the public) PARENTS ASSOCIATION ATHLETIC COMMITTEE MEETING (10/ 7) The all-School committee bringing you GAMETIME! is having an open meeting to discuss plans and feedback on Tuesday, October 7, from 7:45--9:00 a.m. in the Tyler Team Rusch Room in the Athletics Center. All parents are invited to attend. SCHOOL PHOTOS AND MAKE-UP PHOTO DAY (10/7) All students should have received the photo proof sheet to select your school photos. To veiw and select your photos online, visit www.freedspirit.com; click "view your photos" on the bottom left, and then enter your unique ID (found on your proof sheet) on the top left of the page. You can bypass the email prompt by clicking the word "Thumbnails" above your name. Photo Make-up Day is Tuesday, October 7, from 8:00 - 11:00 a.m. Photos will be taken in front of the Middle School building by the Athletic Center entrance. Rain location is the Choral Arts Room. Events ALL THINGS QUAKER Parents are invited to Upper School Meeting for Worship this Thursday, October 9, at 9:35 a.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room. Reception to follow. For those of you who have never attended a Quaker Meeting for Worship (or for those of you who have!) and are curious about silence as a defining feature of that experience, we recommend a video here. Arthur Larrabee, a lifelong Quaker and noted expert on Friends decision-making process, will provide a workshop for all parents on Tuesday, October 14, at 6:00 pm in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room. Light supper will be provided. Whether you operate in a Friends decision-making environment such as our Parents Association, or one that works by consensus or voting, Arthur's wisdom about the importance of listening in order to derive a sense of the meeting will be helpful; and the practice of saying, "I believe passionately about this, but I release it to the meeting" is something everyone should experience -- ask your Upper School students about Collection last week. So that we have enough materials and supper, please RSVP to Kathi Webb (webbk@sidwell.edu) if you plan to attend this workshop. However, you are welcome even if it is a last- minute decision. Sunday, October 19, is our first Community Meeting for Worship at 10:30 a.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room. Please join families, faculty, staff, alumni, and former faculty and staff at this meeting. A child-friendly Meeting for Worship will be available for children ages 4 and up; refreshments will be served at the rise of meeting. If you anticipate bringing your Lower School-age children, please contact Kathi Webb (webbk@sidwell.edu) so we know how many students might participate in our program for younger children. PCW FALL SPEAKER: SUSAN CAIN (OCT 7) To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the Parents Council of Washington (PCW) invites all SFS parents to attend a very special Fall Speaker Program featuring Susan Cain, author of The New York Times bestseller Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking. This free event will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 7, 2014, at Holton-Arms and will also feature cuisine from several renowned local chefs, including Jose Andres, Nora Pouillon, Robert Wiedmeier, and John Snedden. Please see the flyer for details. PCW is a nonprofit organization fostering communication among parents, students, and schools within the greater Washington, D.C., independent school community. Please visit the PCW website or click here for more information. GAMETIME! GIRLS' VARSITY VOLLEYBALL This week’s featured team is Girls' Varsity Volleyball taking on Wilson High School at 4:45 p.m. on Friday, October 10. At 4:15 p.m. we’ll have a pregame party for volleyball fans of all ages in the lobby of the Athletic Center. Get your Sidwell Swag on —there's great new SFS gear at the Fox Den! Spectators are encouraged to share their photos of the game by tagging @SidwellFriends with #goquakers or by e-mailing Kathi Webb (webbk@sidwell.edu). Winning photographer gets a free baseball cap! Next up, we celebrate two teams: Varsity Golf sendoff to the MAC Tournament Tuesday, October 14, at 7:15 a.m. in the garage with donuts, coffee, and juice. Girls' Varsity Soccer game v. Georgetown Visitation, Wednesday, October 15, at 4:15 p.m. COMMUNITY SERVICE ACTIVITY OCT 11: GLEANING AT MILLER FARMS Join the Upper School Community Service Committee for a morning of gleaning at Miller Farms, 10140 Piscataway Rd., Clinton, MD 20735. This is a great way to get out, enjoy some fresh air, good food (there is a bakery with fresh donuts, baked goods, and ice cream, as well as a farm market and barbecue stand) and fellowship. We will be gathering at the parking lot of Miller Farms at 8:30 a.m. and heading to a nearby field to pick crops for a few hours before heading back to the farm store and then back to town. We are often joining other groups of people from the D.C. area, so this is a great way to connect with others and share stories as we pick the foods that will make their way to those in need in our community. Please RSVP to Matt Fraidin, mifraidin@yahoo.com. QUALITY OF COMMUNITY LIFE COMMITTEE The Quality of Community Life Committee and your Grade Representatives warmly invite you to a parent peer group meeting the evening of Homecoming on Saturday, October 18, beginning at 8:30 p.m. (or as soon as you drop off your student at the dance) in the Arts Center. Refreshments will be served, then parents will break out into grade level groups of 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th. We'll have two trained facilitators present for each grade; please join us in a supportive atmosphere for a discussion on a range of topics that impact us and our students. Other QUAKER QUOTES "During this initial period of Quakerism, Friends were not only engaged in sharing their 'good news' with others in England...Of particular importance were the missions to the British colonies in North America and the West Indies. And under the leadership of William Penn (1644-1718), Quaker colonies were established in West Jersey and Pennsylvania. Quakers began to settle in the Delaware Valley in 1675. In 1681, Charles II repaid a sizable debt to the estate of William Penn's father by granting to Penn the land to the west of the Delaware River. The King named this land Pennsylvania in honor of Admiral Penn. William Penn intended to establish there a veritable 'holy experiment'-- an enlightened proprietorship based on New Testament principles and with liberty of conscience guaranteed. Unfortunately, Penn's tenure as proprietor of his colony was frequently marked by conflict...Perhaps the most lasting vestige of Penn's 'holy experiment' is a form of creative tension. Penn's political practice was by no means consistent with his theory, nor was his theory of governance adequately developed. Then as now, the tension between practice and theory, social engagement and mystical illumination, yielded as much heat as light. And yet, the underlying principles of Penn's vision are as pertinent as ever: participatory decision making, religious liberty, justice as fair dealing with one's neighbors, non-violent resistance rather than military defense, and the abolition of oaths." --Faith and Practice of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, 1997 edition Quaker quotes are intended to deepen the understanding of Quakerism within the Sidwell Friends School community.
