Tuesday - September 30, 2014 Principal's Letter NOTES FROM SALLY Announcements REMINDER ABOUT WISCONSIN AVENUE GARAGE GUIDELINES NEXT TO NEW SALE - FINAL COLLECTION DAYS AND CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS COMMUNITY SERVICE CORNER GAME TIME! BOYS VARSITY SOCCER PARENTS ASSOCIATION ATHLETIC COMMITTEE MEETING WORKSHOP FOR PARENTS ON FRIENDS DECISION MAKING PRACTICES QUAKER MEETINGS FOR WORSHIP MILLER FARMS COMMUNITY SERVICE EVENT PCW FALL SPEAKER SUSAN CAIN - OCTOBER 7 Other ENTEROVIRUS INFORMATION FOR PARENTS EVENING BASKETBALL CLINICS PLAYWRIGHT COMPETITION QUAKER QUOTE MS NEWSLETTER INFORMATION News Around the School US NEWS MS NEWS Principal's Letter NOTES FROM SALLY Conference Day.pdfThis week’s query: How can we work with others in a group while incorporating everyone’s ideas and opinions into the product of our work? Assembly: Christylez Bacon, Progressive Hip Hop Artist This week’s Northwest Current Correspondent: Layla Dawitt This Thursday is Middle School Back-to-School Night! Here are some important tips about the evening: If you need child care, you must call and reserve your space today! We need to be sure we have adequate staff and food for the students who are coming. Drop students at the playground at the Wannan Gym, and the fee is $10 cash payable that evening to the adults in charge at Wannan. Students may be picked up at the dining room. The evening will end around 8:15 p.m. for 5/6 students and 8:30 p.m. for 7/8. Parking is available both in the garage and on 37th Street. The Middle School building will be open to access the Meeting Room. The program will begin with a short general meeting at 6:00 p.m. in the Meeting Room. When you approach the Meeting House, please look for a welcome table with a folder for each parent containing the schedule and a nametag. Refreshments will be available for parents in the lobby. If you arrive after 6:30 p.m., please pick up your schedule at the front desk of the Middle School. Many teachers use the time during the general meeting to get their classrooms ready; we ask that you not view that time - or the evening in general - as a time to drop in for private conversation about your son or daughter. Conference days are the last week in October. Many of you have more than one child in the Middle School. We recognize that it is not easy to juggle the evening, and we apologize for the difficulties! Back to School Night is also a good time to check the Lost and Found boxes on the 2nd and 3rd floors. Please remember to label your child’s belongings, especially those PE clothes! Parents will sign up for conferences on Back to School Night. 7/8 parents, please read the attachment above for a description of the 7/8 conference day structure. Now you see it – now you don’t! The crosswalk in the middle of the block on 37th Street has been removed. The DC DDOT Safe Routes to School Coordinator asked that it be taken out (it was actually placed without DDOT authorization). She has asked that everyone, at both Hearst and Sidwell Friends, follow this guideline: Parents who are driving to school are required to drop their students off on the school side of the street. This is considered a best practice for schools across the United States, and is very important for student safety. Due to the narrowness of 37th Street, it is very important that parents arriving at their school only drop off students on the same side of the street as their school. One note to parents who are calling to get messages to your son or daughter: 5/6 students are in PE between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., and 7/8 students from 1:50 p.m. until 3:10 p.m. It is especially difficult to get messages to students who come in at the last minute while they are in PE. Please remember that we have a cell phone recycling bin in the lobby of the Middle School. The company will wipe all of the data on the phone. Announcements REMINDER ABOUT WISCONSIN AVENUE GARAGE GUIDELINES Please model responsible driving behavior for our students and follow these guidelines for safety and efficiency: • There is absolutely no cell phone usage (hands-free or not) while driving on campus. When parked, students can be alerted as to the meeting point via cell phone. • Direct students to enter and exit vehicles on the curb side only. • Pull as far forward and to the right as you can when picking up or dropping off students to allow others to drop off or pick up behind you or pass you on the left. This also applies to students riding the shuttle to LS in the morning; there is a guard to assist them at the crosswalk near security, please do not drop off in the left lane as this leads to big traffic delays behind you. • In the afternoons, once the spaces along the curb fill up and the line starts backing up toward Wisconsin Avenue, drivers waiting for students for longer than 5 minutes may be asked to circle around the garage. If you do arrive early, please pull into a parking space, do not block parked cars, while you wait for your student and then circle around to the pickup lane when they are ready. Additional parking may be available on the lower level and Zartman Circle is also available for drop-off and pick-up. Remember students are rarely ready to depart precisely when the school day ends. • Do not allow your car to idle. Please support the environment and the health of our community by parking in a space and turning off your car when waiting. • Do not block key intersections at Rodman Street, the Post Office, or in the garage. Security staff will direct you as needed to keep traffic flowing, please follow their directions. • Use caution when exiting by the Post Office. This drive is shared by the Post Office and student walkers, who are often distracted or walking with headphones. • There are two traffic signals for cars exiting onto Wisconsin Avenue at the Post Office: The one on the left directs vehicles exiting and entering the Post Office. Proceed on green from the signal on the right, and please do not honk at cars ahead of you who are waiting for their signal. • Parents picking up Lower School students who arrive by shuttle bus are encouraged to use lower level parking. The lower level provides easy access to the Lower School bus by the north stairwell, which is easy and safe to navigate with children. • Parents switching places with student drivers please try to arrive or depart in non-peak hours, or do your switch in a parking spot or in Zartman Circle; the delay caused by walking around the car and adjusting mirrors is not suited to carpool peak periods. Please be respectful and patient. It is not always possible to get in and out of the garage quickly, especially at peak times. Plan your activities accordingly, and remember that safety comes first. Many thanks for doing your part to keep our community safe. Questions or comments? Please contact Kathi Webb at webbk@sidwell.edu. NEXT TO NEW SALE - FINAL COLLECTION DAYS AND CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS The Next-to-New Sale is less than a month away! All parents are invited to attend. WORKSHOP FOR PARENTS ON FRIENDS DECISION MAKING PRACTICES Arthur Larrabee.pdfMany of us know that Quakers do not use a traditional, ‘majority vote’ system for decision making and the parents association seeks to follow the Quaker model. So, how can we make collaborative decisions in an effective manner? Arthur Larrabee will share his wisdom on Friends decision making in a workshop for parents on Tuesday October 14 from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room, after a light supper. In August, SFS faculty and staff took part in a workshop on Friends decision making, and now it is the parents' turn! An acknowledged expert in the Friends decision making process, Arthur will explain important concepts such as the difference between unity and unanimity, a sense of the meeting and consensus, and how to guide committee decisions when there are opposing points of view. Please rsvp to Kathi Webb at webbk@sidwell.edu. For more information about Arthur, please click on the above attachment. QUAKER MEETINGS FOR WORSHIP Save the Date! Quaker Meetings for Worship welcoming parents and caregivers are coming up. First Quakers' sense of themselves as a distinct people with a divine mission became stronger. Their refusal to take oaths under any circumstances, to serve in the army, to take off their hats to persons in authority, to use formal speech, and to dress like the 'world's people' all date from this period. Unlike other dissenters, they insisted on holding their meetings in public in spite of persecution, and this began earning their reputation for scrupulous honesty. Second, the early Friends were more than willing to engage in religious controversy and to defend their basic beliefs...both Margaret Fell and George Fox wrote pamphlets defending a woman's right to preach and prophesy. Third, the early Friends realized that their movement required at least some kind of institutional structure...thus was initiated the bottom-up system of monthly, quarterly, and yearly meetings." ~Faith and Practice of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, 1997 edition Quaker quotes are intended to deepen the understanding of Quakerism at Sidwell Friends School, suggestions and questions may be directed to Cynthia Richie Terrell at ctcabin@gmail.com.
