Thanks Shannon. Two thoughts. First, my view is if Catherine has initiatives she wants supported-we should do so-these donations are coming from a fund started by her donation of proceeds from getting the World Food Prize. On a broader level-we may want to discuss whether we want to continue to handle this for her given the activities it supports are not in alignment with the mission of the WFP-USA. Just something for us to consider. Thanks. Catherine Bertini has offered her recommendations for the Spring 2014 funding cycle of the Catherine Bertini Trust Fund for Girls Education. Ms. Bertini suggests funding the following grantee proposals: Chicuchas Wasi School for Girls Chicuchas Wasi (CW) School for Girls in Cusco, Peru provides free, primary education, emphasizing personal development, empowerment, and academics. In addition to educating our students, we also educate and prepare their mothers with workshops and classes on how to improve their own lives. Chicuchas Wasi School maintains a big presence in the community with cultural celebrations, supporting social issues and woman's issues to spread the message of the value and importance of education for girls. The organization began as a safe house for abandoned children in 1987 and has evolved into an alternative school for girls. 27 years later, the school is a recognized and valued educational institution within the community, empowering women and girls with a free education and building their self-confidence and economic independence. However, a lack of transportation has caused attendance to drop between 25 and 40% in the past. The Bertini Fund grant would go towards safe transportation to and from school for rural students. Attendance has increased to 98% since the school began providing transportation, ensuring that families can keep sending their daughters to school without paying for bus fares. It also makes sure that girls are not at-risk of unwanted male attention on the long walk to school, do not get discouraged by the commute, and do not arrive wet from rain. The 105 enrolled students will be able to focus and complete assignments. Suggested grant amount: $10,750 (female bus driver salary, bus gasoline, and maintenance) Chance for Change Chance for Change and the Burkina Women's Education Fund work together to enable girls from poor families in Burkina Faso who would not continue their educations without help. The organization identifies qualified candidates, visits them to discuss current roadblocks as well as enablers, and coordinates resources to facilitate their health and academic studies. Chance for Change has requested funding to provide tuition for female students, motor scooter transportation so they can get to classes safely and quickly, and resources to facilitate their class work. Through her studies, one student, Haoua, has put together a project to get the women to grow sesame, among others things, and sell it at market. The women participating in her project would earn money for the first time and the project could potentially transform the economy of the entire village. Suggested grant amount: $9,534 (tuition scholarships, computer shipment, and sesame internship project resources) Would you kindly let me know if these recommendations meet your approval, so that we can respond to Ms. Bertini? Thank you.
