Parents are warmly welcomed to join us for Meeting for Worship on Thursday morning at 8:10 a.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room. The Next to New Sale is this week! A reminder that many Middle School students will be involved in a concert this year. Concert dress requirements are as follows: Boys – black* pants, black* shoes, white dress shirt, any color tie. Girls - Black* pants or skirt, white top (must have sleeves) and black* shoes. (*or the darkest you own.) No tennis shoes. If you need these clothes, check the Next to New Sale! Reminder to all Middle School parents: if your child is ill or injured at any point during the year, please be sure that you communicate directly with our nurse, Jasmin Whitfield. If necessary, we are able to modify academic or athletic expectations, but we will need guidance from a physician, and Jasmin is the point of contact for those accommodations. If you will be out of town and your children will be staying with grandparents or other caregivers, please let us know that information. We would appreciate it if you would notify the homeroom teacher or advisor, Julia Porter, and me. This helps us keep our chain of communication intact in the event of any emergency situations. As many of you know, we participate in an alternate-year exchange with a Friends School in York, England, the Bootham School. This is our year to host students, and they will be in DC next April 7 - 14. We are looking for 7th or 8th grade host families who would be willing to have a student during that week. The group will be involved in school-planned activities during the week, but hosts will have the visitors for the evenings and for the weekend of April 11 - 12. FRIENDS DECISION-MAKING WORKSHOP Arthur Larrabee.pdfArthur Larrabee, who is working with the school this year at the request of the Board of Trustees and Ellis Turner, will conduct a workshop for parents from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m., tonight, October 14 about Friends decision making. Arthur conducted similar workshops with the Board of Trustees, all faculty and staff and the Alumni Executive Board. He provided an overview for upper school students on October 1st, is meeting with the upper school student government, honor committee and club leaders, and will be working with 9th graders the morning of October 15. Since the Parents Association seeks to operate in the manner of Friends, we encourage all parents to attend this workshop. Whether you operate in a Friends decision making environment or one that works by consensus or voting, Arthur's wisdom about why Quakers use a sense of the meeting process and the importance of listening in order to derive a sense of the meeting will be helpful; and the practice of saying "I believe passionately about this but I release it to the meeting" is something everyone should experience. A light supper will be served at 5:30 p.m. Please rsvp to Kathi Webb (webbk@sidwell.edu) if you plan to attend this workshop so that we have enough materials. For more information on Arthur Larrabee, click on the link above. SFS Community Service & A Wider Circle - Make a Family's Holiday Wish Come True! For the 2014 holiday season, the Middle School Community Service Committee will be supporting A Wider Circle's gift giving program. This allows our families to adopt a family that is unable to purchase gifts for the holidays. Read on for how this experience impacted one Sidwell family! This was one of the highlights of our family's holiday season last year! After receiving a detailed wish list, the four of us had so much fun putting gifts together for each member of our Wider Circle family. Our experience was made even more rich by getting to know the parent, a single mother in this case, and delivering the gifts to her apartment when her kids were away. It was a powerful opportunity to put ourselves in the place of those less fortunate and help make their holiday wishes come true. Please consider signing up or, if it feels like too big of a commitment, you may wish to partner with another Sidwell family! If you're interested or have any questions, please contact Marjan at marjanehsassi@hotmail.com or 202-664-4706. QUAKER MEETINGS FOR WORSHIP • Thursday, October 16, 8:10 - 8:45 a.m. Parents and caregivers are invited to worship with the Middle School staff and students in the Robert L. Smith Meetinghouse. Smith Meetinghouse. Worship between 10:30 - 11:30 a.m., followed by refreshments. A child-friendly meeting for worship will be available for children ages 4 and up, and refreshments will be served at the rise of meeting. If you anticipate bringing your lower school age children please contact Kathi Webb (webbk@sidwell.edu) so we know how many students might participate in our program for younger children. With questions, please contact Middle School Quaker Life clerks Virginia Avanesyan, avanesyanfamily@gmail.com, or Amy Henderson msausten@mac.com. Any good therefore that I can do, or any kindness or abilities that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer it or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again." ~ William Penn Quaker Quotes are intended to deepen the understanding and appreciation of Quakerism within the Sidwell Friends School community.
