Wednesday, February 26, 2014 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. King & Spalding LLP 1700 Pennsylvania Ave., NW Suite 200 Washington, D.C. 20006 ----------------- In his recent State of the Union Address, President Obama asked Congress to pass Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) legislation to permit him to pursue trade agreements with European and Asia Pacific nations. Under TPA, Congress gives the President authority to negotiate trade agreements pursuant to negotiating objectives established by Congress and in close consultation with Congressional members. In return Congress agrees to consider completed agreements without amendments in a speedy up-or-down vote. Please join us for a panel discussion with top lawmakers from the Ways & Means Committee who will explore what TPA, and the trade agreements they facilitate, mean for jobs, the economy, and the environment, and whether lawmakers can find a path forward to pass TPA legislation this year. Featuring: - Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) is a member of the Budget Committee and Ways and Means Committee and the subcommittees on Health and Trade. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1996, having previously served as Portland’s Commissioner of Public Works. A lifelong resident of Portland, Oregon, Congressman Earl Blumenauer (OR-3) has devoted his entire career to public service - Rep. Jim Gerlach (R-PA) is a member of House Ways and Means Committee, serving on the Health and Select Revenue Subcommittees. Rep. Gerlach is serving his sixth term in the U.S. House of Representatives. His distinguished career began in 1990 with the first of two terms in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, which was followed by two terms in the Pennsylvania Senate. National publications, including National Journal and Roll Call, have recognized Rep. Gerlach’s strong record as an independent voice for his constituents Moderated by: - Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. is senior counsel in the Government Advocacy and Public Policy practice group at King & Spalding. Having served as Governor, U.S. Congressman, state legislator, and civil litigator, he counsels clients on an array of government matters, with particular expertise in financial services, health care, and economic development. Prior to serving as Governor, Ehrlich served four terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, including tenure on the House Financial Services Committee - Hon. Michael A. Andrews is Senior Counsel in the Government Advocacy and Public Policy practice group at King & Spalding. Congressman Andrews was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1982 and represented a Houston area district in the U.S. House of Representatives for twelve years. Congressman Andrews was a member of the Committee on Ways and Means, which has primary jurisdiction over federal tax legislation, healthcare, trade and welfare policies. He was also a member of the Budget Committee and the Joint Economic Committee - Thomas Spulak is a Partner and Practice Group Leader of the Government Advocacy & Public Policy Group King & Spalding. He has over twenty-five years of experience in Washington including previously serving as General Counsel to the U.S. House of Representatives and as Democratic Staff Director and General Counsel of the House Rules Committee. - Bonnie Byers is an economist in the International Trade practice group at King & Spalding.
