Tuesday - February 11, 2014 From the School THIS WEEK'S QUERY How can you contribute to global peace, even in our small community? NOTES FROM SALLY Assembly: The Annual BSU Show The 2014-2015 Academic Calendar has been posted on the school website for your information. 7th and 8th grade students are invited to a dance at Norwood School this Friday evening. The event will be held in the Marsh Gym from 7:30 – 10:00 PM. Admission is $5 and 1 can of food for the Manna Food Center. Students should bring their SFS ID and dress appropriately. We will be doing our CTP testing today through Thursday. If your child is sick, please do not worry about sending him or her – we will manage make-ups next week. Also, if the threatened winter weather arrives mid-week we will follow this plan: if we open late on Thursday, we will do the CTP testing. If we are closed on Thursday, we will wait until next week to wrap up the testing. Some congratulations to Middle School students: Congratulations to all those who attended the second Middle school Math Meet of the year, held at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Day School on February 5th . Led by perfect or near-perfect scores from 6th grader Ethan Isaacson, 7th graders Nathan Shapiro, Ariana Warden, David Hacker, Arjun Rolfing-Das, and Arjun Sethi-Olowin, and 8th graders Isabel Kirsch, Anders Broadnax, Ella Stark, and Kevin Jiang, Sidwell’s team edged out St. Albans to win first place among over a dozen teams from DC area private schools. The final math meet of the year will be held on April 9th. Congratulations to 8th graders Kevin Jiang, Isabel Kirsch, and Ella Stark, 7th graders Mitchell Jubeir, Nathan Shapiro, David Hacker, Ariana Warden, Lauren Adler, and 6th graders Etan Basser and Ethan Isaacson, all of whose superb performances at the Chapter Competition this past Saturday qualified them to compete in the State Math Counts competition in March. Sidwell won first place in the Team competition over St. Albans, and Kevin and Mitchell placed 2nd and 4th, respectively, in the Individual competition. Also on Saturday, Sidwell Friends Middle School hosted the third DC Urban Debate League tournament of year. Present at the tournament were 210 debaters (70 teams) from 14 area middle schools. SFS Middle School brought 12 teams of three debaters each, and the teams and debaters fared quite well. Of the 36 Sidwell Friends debaters, the following were in the top 20 in speaker points: 20th, Sophie Horst, 18th, Ana Mundaca, 15th, Alex Wang, 12th, Madeleine Montagner, 9th, Rachel Blatt and 8th overall, Emma Passmore. Several SFS teams also ranked very highly among the 70 teams present, with four teams in the top ten: the 8th ranked team overall was the team of Claire Choi, Olivia Choi and Ellie Ihegihu; 6th overall went to the team of Rama Somborac, Sophie Horst and Nia Baker, 5th overall went to the team of Ana Mundaca, Madeleine Montagner and Sarah Baldino, and third place overall went to the team of Rachel Blatt, Matthew Gunty and Emma Passmore. Congratulations to all of the debaters. RE-ENROLLMENT IS UNDERWAY IMPORTANT – The re-enrollment process for 2014-15 is currently underway. You can access your child’s contract through the parent portal. The contract along with deposit must be submitted by Friday, February 21, 2014. Call the Admissions Office at 202-537-8111 with any questions. STUDENT HEALTH FORMS STUDENT HEALTH FORMS It's time to begin thinking about student health forms for the 2014-2015 school year. As you may have noticed, annual physicals are now on a rolling 12 month basis. This means you will receive automatic email reminders directly from Magnus Health 6 weeks prior to the due date of your child's next physical examination. All documentation and blank health forms must be submitted via the Parent Portal on the SFS website by clicking on the Update Student Health Information link. Please note the following D.C. immunization requirements: 1. Students 11 years & older entering 6th through 8th grades in the District of Columbia are due to have a TdaP vaccination if they have not had a dose of DTP/DTaP/Td in the past five years. This immunization must be documented and on file with your child's health records on or before their 12th birthday. 2. For students 11 years & older entering 6th through 8th grades in the District of Columbia, a series of three HPV vaccinations are required. A parent/guardian may sign the District of Columbia Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination Opt-out Certificate. This certificate can be found by logging into your student's Magnus Health Tracker. The immunizations or the completed Opt-out Certificate must be documented and on file with your child's health records on or before their twelfth birthday. 3. Students 11 years & older entering 6th through 8th grade in the District of Columbia are due to have a Meningococcal vaccination. This immunization must be documented and on file with your child's health records on or before their twelfth birthday. FRIENDS FAMILY SCIENCE NIGHT AT AIR & SPACE MUSEUM Family Science Night will take place on Wednesday, February 26 from 6:45-9:00pm. Buses will depart from the Wisconsin Avenue campus at 6:15pm and return by 9:20pm. We have space for 125 people from Sidwell Friends. The program is geared for students in 3rd grade and up (younger children should not attend). This is a family event and adults and older students will definitely find it worthwhile. Selected museum galleries will be open before the program. The evening includes the IMAX film 3D- Magnificent Desolation and a presentation by scientist Jeff Goldstein on human exploration of space. Those of you who have attended in the past know that Dr. Goldstein is a dynamic presenter and makes complex space science accessible to all. If you are interested in attending Family Science Night, send an email to reserve your spot to Sam Francis, LS Science Teacher. Indicate how many people in your family will be attending, the name of any Sidwell students and the grade level of each student you are bringing. We will be charging a $5 per person fee to cover the cost of the buses with a $15 per family maximum. The Air & Space Museum will not allow individual entry to the museum on that night. Hope to see you there! JOIN SIDWELL FRIENDS IN PARIS MARCH 22-23 The Upper School Chamber Chorus, directed by John Touchton, is traveling to Europe in March, and we hope you can join! The Chorus will perform at a reception hosted by Meg & Christian Clerc, parents of Sidwell Friends alumnae, at the Four Seasons George V Hotel, followed by a performance at Notre-Dame de Paris. The Chorus will also then travel to Prague for the Music Festival. All are welcome. Log on here to RSVP, view the complete schedule, get lodging information, and more. Nous espérons vous y voir.
