Worker Dies of Ebola in Germany U.N. Worker Dies of Ebola in Germany
Top News: The Ebola outbreak that has killed more than 4,000 people has claimed its first victim in Germany. A 56-year-old man who had worked for the United Nations in Liberia <a style="font-weight:bold;color:#ea1414;" href="http://link.foreignpolicy.com/5253172ac16bcfa46f6bd4c71wfdk.1dis/VD0nGsPoNUeT2UDeAea99>died at the hospital in Leipzig where he was being treated, <a style="font-weight:bold;color:#ea1414;" href="http://link.foreignpolicy.com/5253172ac16bcfa46f6bd4c71wfdk.1dis/VD0nGsPoNUeT2UDfA7fcd>despite being given experimental drugs. He was the third to receive treatment in Germany and the first to die.

The recent spread of the disease outside of Africa has raised <a style="font-weight:bold;color:#ea1414;" href="http://link.foreignpolicy.com/5253172ac16bcfa46f6bd4c71wfdk.1dis/VD0nGsPoNUeT2UDgAd182>concerns in Europe and America about the ability of healthcare systems to treat and contain the deadly virus. The transmission to a nurse in Texas who was treating an Ebola victim has spurred the Center for Disease Control to <a style="font-weight:bold;color:#ea1414;" href="http://link.foreignpolicy.com/5253172ac16bcfa46f6bd4c71wfdk.1dis/VD0nGsPoNUeT2UDhAc9e8>reconsider its plan to contain the disease.

Dr. Margaret Chen, the director general of the World Health Organization, has said that the outbreak is "unquestionably the most severe acute public health emergency in modern times." The crisis has grown, she <a style="font-weight:bold;color:#ea1414;" href="http://link.foreignpolicy.com/5253172ac16bcfa46f6bd4c71wfdk.1dis/VD0nGsPoNUeT2UDiA698a>said on Monday, from a public health problem to "a crisis for international peace and security," as the outbreak has raised the grim possibility of state failure for poor countries that are afflicted.

The head of the World Bank, Dr. Jim Yong Kim, has <a style="font-weight:bold;color:#ea1414;" href="http://link.foreignpolicy.com/5253172ac16bcfa46f6bd4c71wfdk.1dis/VD0nGsPoNUeT2UDjAf453>committed $400 million of his organization's funds to fighting the disease -- one of the largest single sums donated -- the first $105 million reached the governments of the effected countries within nine days. The economic cost of the outbreak has been projected as high as <a style="font-weight:bold;color:#ea1414;" href="http://link.foreignpolicy.com/5253172ac16bcfa46f6bd4c71wfdk.1dis/VD0nGsPoNUeT2UDkAbc08>$32.6 billion by the end of 2015.

Middle East: President Barack Obama will meet with military leadership from Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and 19 other countries to <a style="font-weight:bold;color:#ea1414;" href="http://link.foreignpolicy.com/5253172ac16bcfa46f6bd4c71wfdk.1dis/VD0n1sPo8bnlqB8UA9bfd>establish a strategy for fighting the Islamic State. Led by Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the meeting "is part of ongoing efforts to build the coalition and integrate the capabilities of each country into the broader strategy," according to a spokesman for White House National Security Council.

The White House had stumbled into a <a style="font-weight:bold;color:#ea1414;" href="http://link.foreignpolicy.com/5253172ac16bcfa46f6bd4c71wfdk.1dis/VD0nGsPoNUeT2UDlA4efe>controversy earlier in the week after announcing that Turkey had given the green light for American fighter jets to use bases in Turkey to attack target in Iraq and Syria, which the government in Ankara quickly denied.
Asia
• Australia's High Court will <a style='font-weight:bold;color:#ea1414;' href="http://link.foreignpolicy.com/5253172ac16bcfa46f6bd4c71wfdk.1dis/VD0nGsPoNUeT2UDmA8b01>hear two cases challenging the country's treatment of asylum seekers.

• Police in Hong Kong <a style='font-weight:bold;color:#ea1414;' href="http://link.foreignpolicy.com/5253172ac16bcfa46f6bd4c71wfdk.1dis/VD0nGsPoNUeT2UDnA5e43>dismantled barricades built by protesters near the government offices.
