Tuesday - February 18, 2014 From the School THIS WEEK'S QUERY What should you do when you encounter peer pressure? NOTES FROM SALLY SFS Food Drive Shopping List.docxThis week’s assembly: BSU show – postponed from last week. Thanks so much to all who attended the program on parental supervision of technology last Monday evening! We’ve been a little delayed in getting the presentation sent out, but it will be sent this week and will be available on the Parent Portal as well. Our winter food drive is beginning. Please help us collect food to send to The Capital Area Food Bank with our Helping Hands Minimester! A suggested shopping list is attached. Believe it or not, spring sports begin next Monday! The contract along with deposit must be submitted by Friday, February 21, 2014. Call the Admissions Office at 202-537-8111 with any questions. PA Announcements FAMILY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY The Community Service Committee is sponsoring a family service opportunity at A Wider Circle in Silver Spring, Maryland. Please join us on Saturday, March 8, 2014, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. A Wider Circle provides basic need items to families transitioning out of shelters or simply living without life’s necessities. AWC furnishes the homes of more than 1,000 children and adults every single month, all free of charge. A Wider Circle is buzzing with activity on Saturdays, with families picking up their basic needs and donors dropping things off. Volunteers help sort through clothing and other donated items, organize and display household goods, and assist families shopping for clothing and items needed to furnish their new homes. To RSVP or with questions, please email Matt Fraidin. MIDDLE SCHOOL PA LOOKING TO FILL POSITIONS FOR NEXT YEAR If you enjoy community-building and would like to make a contribution to the school or your child's grade, please consider volunteering for the PA. There are Grade Representative positions and Committee Clerks (Arts, Athletics, Quality of Community Life Committee, Community Service, Diversity, Quaker Life) available in the Middle School, and there will also be opportunities to serve as Team and Room parents. If you are interested in serving in some capacity, would like to suggest someone else, or simply need more information, please contact MS Nominating Clerk Anne Conlee Mazlish via email or 703-447-3517, or All-School Nominating Clerk Althea Jacques-Ireland via email or 301-675-8837. Other News QUAKER QUOTE "In the true marriage relationship the independence of the husband and wife is equal, their dependence mutual, and their obligations reciprocal." Lucretia Mott, 1876 "Born Lucretia Coffin on January 3, 1793, in Nantucket, Massachusetts, Lucretia Mott was a women's rights activist, abolitionist, and religious reformer. Mott was strongly opposed to slavery and a supporter of William Lloyd Garrison and his American Anti-Slavery Society. She was dedicated to women's rights, publishing her influential Discourse on Woman and founding Swarthmore College. Mott died in Pennsylvania in 1880." From Biography.com. Read more about Mott here. RISING 9TH GRADE ROWERS!!! Did you know that the Sidwell Friends Upper School has a girls’ crew? Rowing is an increasingly popular team sport in the region, great for building fitness, strength, endurance, teamwork, self-discipline, and friendships! If your daughter is interested in learning to row, there are a number of summer camps nearby that welcome beginners. A week of summer camp is an excellent way for kids to give crew a try and start to develop their skills before joining a team. A list of summer programs, as well as information about Sidwell's newest varsity sport, is available on the team website, or feel free to contact co-presidents Monica Dolin and MaryAnn Nash via email.
