By Theodoric Meyer | 08/03/2016 10:00 AM EDT With Elena Schneider, Kevin Robillard and Maggie Severns The following newsletter is an abridged version of Campaign Pro's Morning Score. For an earlier morning read on exponentially more races - and for a more comprehensive aggregation of the day's most important campaign news - sign up for Campaign Pro today. (http://www.politicopro.com/proinfo) PRIMARY RESULTS - "Huelskamp loses GOP primary after ideological battle," by Campaign Pro's Elena Schneider: "GOP Rep. Tim Huelskamp, a three-term incumbent and House Freedom Caucus member from Kansas, lost his House primary Tuesday night to challenger Roger Marshall, a physician backed by agricultural interests and several big-spending outside groups. Marshall had 57 percent of the vote to Huelskamp's 43 percent when The Associated Press called the race with 72 percent of precincts reporting. Huelskamp's primary in the 'Big First' district, a safely Republican seat, became a proxy war between hard-line conservatives and more traditional GOP groups and donors. And in a twist on the usual script in recent anti-incumbent House GOP primaries, Marshall campaigned as a more pragmatic voice, promising voters he would reclaim the district's longtime seat on the House Agriculture Committee. Huelskamp was removed from the committee in 2012 after angering House GOP leadership." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=16ff175b0c64e0a6e94ba77a62186669aada2339dcaee6a8f3b6ddabfb23c76d - Greitens wins GOP primary for Missouri governor: Republican Eric Greitens, an energetic former Navy SEAL making his first run for elected office, will face Democratic Attorney General Chris Koster this fall in the Missouri gubernatorial race after winning a four-way GOP primary tonight. Greitens had 35 percent of the vote with all precincts reporting. Businessman John Brunner had 25 percent of the vote, Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder had 21 percent and former federal prosecutor Catherine Hanaway had 20 percent. A Democratic group linked to the DGA aired late ads criticizing Greitens for accepting a $1 million donation from a donor accused of sexual abuse, but it did not manage to sink him. Jay Inslee will face Republican Bill Bryant as expected in the general election. Results: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bf4be689cf2af67d2c1a07332bee98f9f586426a6f53bd14c1636b03f507c33 - Bergman wins GOP nomination in MI-01: Jack Bergman, a retired Marine general, won a three-way race to replace retiring GOP Rep. Dan Benishek in Michigan. With all precincts reporting, Bergman had 39 percent of the vote. State Sen. Tom Casperson had 32 percent and former state Sen. Jason Allen had 29 percent. Bergman, who loaned his campaign $270,000 in the primary, which face Democrat Lon Johnson, a former state party chairman who easily defeated Jerry Cannon in the primary. Michigan's vast 1st District leans slightly Republican. - Mitchell wins five-way primary to replace Miller in MI-10: Paul Mitchell, a businessman who poured $2.5 million of his own money into his campaign, won a five-way Republican primary to replace retiring GOP Rep. Candice Miller in eastern Michigan. With all precincts reporting, Mitchell led four rivals with 38 percent of the vote. Democrat Frank Accavitti was unopposed on the Democratic side, but the district is expected to remain in Republican hands. - Jayapal advances in WA-07: Democrat Pramila Jayapal will advance to the general election in the race to fill retiring Democratic Rep. Jim McDermott's seat in Washington state's "top two" primary system. With 79 percent of precincts reporting Tuesday night, Jayapal led eight other candidates, with 38 percent of the vote. She'll face another Democrat for the deep-blue Seattle seat - but it's not clear which one. King County Councilman Joe McDermott (no relation) had 21.5 percent of the vote, and state Sen. Brady Walkinshaw had 20.9 percent. Jayapal is one of the handful of House candidates whom Bernie Sanders has endorsed. Moderates ... prevailed in at least five closely watched House districts in the county, defeating conservative incumbent Republicans," as well as at least five state Senate races. Senate Majority Leader Terry Bruce "of Hutchinson was defeated by moderate Edward Berger in the GOP primary. ... The outcome is a stunning rebuke of Gov. Sam Brownback, who has relied on conservative support in the Legislature for six years. Tuesday's results will likely alter his approach to governing in the final two years of his term." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=16ff175b0c64e0a6be05367e0d9f5bb72d6fc3cba04e39633cfb860ec6c2505d INTRA-PARTY STRIFE - "Trump acolytes campaign to defeat Ryan," by POLITICO's Kenneth P. Vogel and Rachael Bade in Janesville, Wis.: "With the relationship between Paul Ryan and Donald Trump already increasingly fraught, POLITICO has learned that a group of former Trump campaign hands are quietly working to defeat the House speaker in his primary election next week. More than half a dozen of Trump's former campaign staff members or leading volunteer organizers from around the country - and many more local volunteers - have signed on to the long-shot campaign of Ryan's primary challenger, businessman Paul Nehlen, who is openly embracing Trump and casting Ryan as an impediment to Trump's agenda. While they were not sent by Trump - in fact, most of the staffers had been laid off by his shoestring primary campaign or left amid infighting - their re-emergence in Ryan's Southeastern Wisconsin district is notable." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=16ff175b0c64e0a6194977f55daf7c98b8e11c3749645a76cb13d0f1d5e74739 - Trump, meanwhile, declined to endorse Ryan. "I'm not quite there yet," Trump told The Washington Post's Philip Rucker. He also declined to endorse GOP Sen. John McCain of Arizona, who castigated Trump on Monday after the Republican nominee criticized the parents of a fallen Muslim-American soldier. "I've never been there with John McCain because I've always felt that he should've done a much better job for the vets," Trump said. "Neither Speaker Ryan nor anyone on his team has ever asked for Donald Trump's endorsement," Zack Roday, a Ryan campaign spokesman, said in a statement in response. "And we are confident in a victory next week regardless." McCain's campaign did not respond to a request for comment. But McCain has mentioned on the campaign trail that he has five full-time Senate staffers handling Veteran's Affairs cases from across the country. - "Few Republicans want to campaign with Trump," by POLITICO's Alex Isenstadt and Theodoric Meyer: "As Donald Trump staggers following a series of self-inflicted political wounds, Republican candidates up and down the ballot are expressing growing disinterest in hitting the campaign trail with him this fall. Over the last week, POLITICO surveyed nearly 50 GOP candidates in competitive House, Senate, and gubernatorial races on whether they'd be willing to campaign with the Republican nominee. Only a handful said yes - and the rest either said no, refused to commit, or didn't respond at all." - "It's an unusual turn of events. Typically down-ballot candidates - eager to generate excitement and media attention for themselves, to turbocharge fundraising, and to increase their stature - spend the fall months proudly campaigning alongside their presidential nominee. But in the year of Trump, appearing on the same stage as the party's standard-bearer, whose negative ratings are higher than any GOP nominee in recent memory, is perilous for those running in hyper-competitive states and districts. "I would recommend they have a perpetual scheduling conflict," said Rob Jesmer, a former National Republican Senatorial Committee executive director who advises a number of the party's most prominent lawmakers." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=16ff175b0c64e0a64f61754eee0ffd13bbfdf6034bc0093315094133ebd96168 Days until the 2016 election: 97. NEW THIS MORNING - New Johnson ad attacks Feingold on national security: GOP Sen. Ron Johnson's campaign is out with a new TV ad criticizing former Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold on his national security votes in the Senate. "Feingold was the only senator to vote against intelligence tools after 9/11," the narrator says. "Feingold also opposed special ops when he voted against authorizing our military 11 separate times. And he voted against terrorist surveillance on lone wolves." The ad is running statewide. Roy Blunt and his Democratic opponent, Jason Kander, both won their primaries easily on Tuesday - and Blunt is going on the offensive now. Two new Blunt ads, paid for with the NRSC and going on air Wednesday, tie Kander to Hillary Clinton and paint him as untrustworthy. "Do you believe we're headed in the right direction? Hillary Clinton and Jason Kander do," a narrator says in one ad. "They've pledged to continue the same failed policies holding America back, like Obamacare." A second ad claims that Kander has been caught "manipulating the language of ballot initiatives." "If we can't trust Jason Kander in Missouri, how can we trust him in Washington?" the narrator asks. Three recent polls have shown Kander trailing incumbent Blunt by 3 to 7 percentage points in Missouri. Watch the first ad: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bf4be689cf2af675ccab5596e8917d54f5538e35c4a3da43f44c4a6b0d028b7 Watch the second ad: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bf4be689cf2af6775d087703207b39908d07e0b09d8cda4c3479cba65be231c AIR SUPPORT - AFSCME readies seven-figure ad campaign against Heck, per KTNV's Jon Ralston: "A major labor union is coming with a seven-figure buy-in Nevada starting this week hitting U.S. Senate candidate Joe Heck on an oldie but reliable goodie: Social Security privatization," the longtime Nevada political reporter Jon Ralston reports. "The spot from the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (see below) uses regular folks to pound Rep. Heck as more loyal to Wall Street donors than seniors. This theme already has been used by a Democratic super PAC. One source tells me the AFSCME buy is $1.4 million in Las Vegas and Reno through Aug. 16." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=16ff175b0c64e0a63e8c5be638f712baf68d3e2c8e17c8d45e9330062faabcfe Watch the ad: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bf4be689cf2af67bb228e3defb79146ee7453bfffdce970ed1549d18e5e8e12 POLL IN ONE - "EMILY's List poll: Garcia and Taddeo almost tied," by POLITICO Florida's Marc Caputo: "The Democratic race for one of the nation's most competitive congressional primaries might be close to tied, according to a new poll that shows former U.S. Rep. Joe Garcia nursing a 2-point lead over former Florida lieutenant governor candidate Annette Taddeo. Garcia's 40-38 percent lead over Taddeo could evaporate in the final month of the primary because undecided voters appear more likely to break her way, according to a memo from the pollster that conducted the survey on behalf of the abortion-rights group EMILY's List, which backs Taddeo in the race for South Florida's 26th Congressional District." The winner will face GOP Rep. Carlos Curbelo. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bf4be689cf2af6779d50096bfc64c2d9e818a8a933e343912b8984e608bea6d PRESIDENTIAL SPEED READ - "Trump shuffles North Carolina campaign team, by POLITICO's Eli Stokols: "With three months before Election Day, Donald Trump's campaign has hired a new state director to stabilize its campaign in North Carolina, a state that Republicans barely won four years ago and is now a top pick-up opportunity for Democrats. Jason Simmons, 35, has ostensibly taken over for Earl Phillip, an outspoken African-American conservative who Trump hired last fall to run North Carolina for him. But Phillip, who did not attend the Republican National Convention last month, had already ceded day-to-day campaign responsibilities to his young deputy, Taylor Playforth." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=16ff175b0c64e0a694e40d31e890b57effb19ab81098d9ae076c997a9aa36d2e - "Meg Whitman, calling Donald Trump a 'demagogue,' will support Hillary Clinton for president," by The New York Times' Jonathan Martin: "Meg Whitman, a Hewlett-Packard executive and Republican fund-raiser, said Tuesday that she would support Hillary Clinton for president and give a 'substantial' contribution to her campaign in order to stop Donald J. Trump, whom she berated as a threat to American democracy. 'I will vote for Hillary, I will talk to my Republican friends about helping her, and I will donate to her campaign and try to raise money for her,' Ms. Whitman said in a telephone interview. She revealed that Mrs. Clinton, the Democratic nominee, had reached out to her in a phone call about a month ago, one of the first indications that Mrs. Clinton is aggressively courting Republican leaders. While acknowledging she diverged from Mrs. Clinton on many policy issues, Ms. Whitman said it was time for Republicans 'to put country first before party.'" http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=16ff175b0c64e0a6b1bd8b5acd17c3627f40fac3a69362f91182157ea989ad9a - "George W. Bush Delivers Critique of Donald Trump's Policies," by The Wall Street Journal's Beth Reinhard and Reid J. Epstein: "Without naming Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, former President George W. Bush delivered an incisive critique of his policies of "isolationism, nativism and protectionism" at a private fundraiser in Cincinnati on Tuesday for Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, according to four people who attended. ... Mr. Bush told the crowd of about 400 people that he had been reflecting on threats against American exceptionalism, though he didn't put his remarks in the context of the 2016 presidential campaign." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=16ff175b0c64e0a6e0c60efe7ccc0892b764a8d909ddcfb929f67ce4ba2c23de CODA - QUOTE OF THE DAY: "Did he get in as a U.S. citizen, or was he brought into Harvard University as a citizen who wasn't from this country?" - Corey Lewandowski, Donald Trump's former campaign manager, who revived Trump's repeatedly debunked "birther" claims about President Barack Obama on CNN on Tuesday night.
