Dive Deeper: The Wilson Center’s Haleh Esfandiari recently authored a commentary, “How Turkey’s Accusations Against Academics in Wake of Coup Echo Iran’s Practices (https://www.wilsoncenter.org/article/how-turkeys-accusations-against-academics-wake-coup-attempt-echo-irans-practices) .” ** Shrinking Warning Time ------------------------------------------------------------ CNN’s Barbara Starr reported (http://www.cnn.com/2016/08/17/politics/north-korea-nuclear-attack-warning-time/index.html) late this afternoon that the US government is increasingly concerned that advances in North Korea's weapons program have dramatically decreased the warning time for a nuclear attack on America or its allies. Dive Deeper: CSIS’s new micro-website “Beyond Parallel (http://beyondparallel.csis.org/) ” is an interactive designed to prepare the international public for Korean unification—it examines all of the key issues associated with unification, including the first-ever database of expert assessments that try to quantify how much we know about unification. ** From Iran with Love ------------------------------------------------------------ Russia today launched a second day of air strikes against Syrian militants from an Iranian air base, rejecting US suggestions that its cooperation with Tehran might violate a UN resolution as illogical and factually incorrect, as Reuters’ Alexander Winning and Andrew Osborn report (http://www.reuters.com/article/us-mideast-crisis-russia-iran-idUSKCN10S0VB) . ** US Patriots ------------------------------------------------------------ Saudi Arabia used American-made Patriot missile interceptors to shoot down rockets fired by Houthi rebels from Yemen last week, according to a top US military commander, as Defense One’s Marcus Weisgerber reports (http://www.defenseone.com/business/2016/08/us-made-patriot-missiles-shoot-down-houthi-rockets/130813/?oref=d_brief_nl) . Dive Deeper: CSIS’s Missile Threat Project (http://missilethreat.csis.org/the-missile-war-in-yemen/) shows that Houthis have fired missiles from Yemen toward Saudi Arabia at least 19 times between June 2015 and July 23—only two of those missiles were not intercepted. ** In That Number ------------------------------------------------------------ ** 50 ------------------------------------------------------------ The number of T-72 tanks that Russia has given to Nicaragua—free of charge. Source: Washington Post (https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/the_americas/nicaragua-shows-off-russian-t72-tank/2016/08/16/95a622ce-63e6-11e6-b4d8-33e931b5a26d_story.html) . ** Critical Quote ------------------------------------------------------------ ** “The most important legacy of the American experience following 9/11 will not be the novelty of fear, but rather how well the country copes with that fear while adhering to its constitutional framework.” ------------------------------------------------------------ — CSIS’s Kathleen H. Hicks on preserving America’s national character while confronting the threat of terrorism. Source: “What Will Americans Do About Their Fear of Terrorism? (http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2016/08/the-state-of-national-security-after-911/496046/) ” via the Atlantic. ** One to Watch ------------------------------------------------------------ (Photo Credit: Harvard Magazine.) Graham Allison is the director of the Belfer Center at the Harvard Kennedy School. He co-authored “Why the U.S. President Needs a Council of Historians (http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2016/09/dont-know-much-about-history/492746/) ” with Niall Ferguson, which appears in the September 2016 issue of the Atlantic Monthly. ** Optics ------------------------------------------------------------ (Photo Credit: Aleksey Filippov/AFP/Getty Images.) A Ukrainian paratrooper, with the nom-de-guerre Boroda (Beard), and member of an air assault battalion defending the small town of Shyrokyne, in Donetsk region, walks among the ruins of building destroyed by pro-Russian separatists shelling on August 14. ** Highly Recommended ------------------------------------------------------------ “What Will Americans Do About Their Fear of Terrorism? (http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2016/08/the-state-of-national-security-after-911/496046/) ” by CSIS’s Kathleen Hicks in the Atlantic. ** CSIS Tomorrow ------------------------------------------------------------ Join CSIS and the US Naval Institute tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. for a Maritime Security Dialogue (https://www.csis.org/events/future-naval-aviation?block3) on the future of naval aviation, featuring Vice Admiral Mike Shoemaker. ** CSIS On Demand ------------------------------------------------------------ Watch “Transatlantic Policy on Economic Sanctions: Promises and Pitfalls (https://www.csis.org/events/transatlantic-policy-economic-sanctions-promises-and-pitfalls) ” for a discussion on US-EU coordination on sanctions against Russia. ** Sounds ------------------------------------------------------------ Smart Women, Smart Power released a new podcast today, “An Insider Look at Japan's Womenomics (https://www.csis.org/podcasts/smart-women-smart-power-podcast) ,” which explores the role of Japanese women in the workforce. ** I Like It Like That ------------------------------------------------------------ This is aterrific story about music and conflict in eastern Ukraine (http://www.npr.org/2016/08/17/490314027/american-charity-helps-to-repair-war-ravaged-music-school-in-ukraine?utm_campaign=storyshare&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_medium=social) . Along the border, where tensions with Russia run high, an American charity, Spirit of America, is helping to rebuild a music school. This kind of hearts and minds project is part of a US-led effort to support Ukraine against Russia's incursions. NPR's David Welna visited the music school, traveling there with Ukrainian troops. ** Smiles ------------------------------------------------------------ Now this is truly a gem. The sublime Smokey Robinson showed up a few years ago to jam with Daryl Hall for Live from Daryl’s House. Smokey was already into his seventh decade on this earth when he recorded this rousing duet version of “Tears of a Clown (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDVceKdx1UY&list=PL3169FFF6D7D99F5D&index=30) ” with Hall. And what can you say about Smokey? He’s grace personified. Just days ago, the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) announced they will award Smokey with their annual Courage and Commitment Award this October. Multiple myeloma is a cancer of the plasma cell. It is the second most common blood cancer and researchers are making serious progress. MMRF is one of the leading cancer research organizations worldwide and its groundbreaking precision medicine model is the only end-to-end solution in cancer research today. The foundation is leading the way in the fight against all cancers with a goal of finding a cure. Smile and watch this—with the help of Smokey and others, it’s gonna’ happen. ** Feedback ------------------------------------------------------------ I always welcome and benefit from your feedback.
