When I worked with Elizabeth Warren in 2007 to launch the fight for a consumer watchdog agency, we knew two things. <br>
<p>One is that we were doing the right thing. Credit card companies, mortgage brokers, and payday lenders were preying on middle class families. </p>
Two is that the odds were against us. It had been generations since Washington had taken such meaningful action on behalf of consumers, and Republicans and Democrats alike said it was a non-starter. <br>

The Big Banks and Wall Street lobbyists lined up against us -- spending $1.3 billion and hiring an army of 2,500 lobbyists. <br>

But we kept on. We took them on. And we won.</strong><br>
<br>
This week marks the one-year anniversary of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. <br>
<br>
Today, it is protecting consumers against deceptive credit card practices, helping students better understand their student loans, and safeguarding against the tricky fine print on home mortgages.<br>
<br>
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was a big win for the American people, but the lesson from that fight is just as important: with the right ideas and the right leadership, we can create dramatic change – and we shouldn’t be satisfied with tiny tinkers.<br>
