By Elena Schneider | 08/01/2016 10:00 AM EDT With Theodoric Meyer, Maggie Severns and Scott Bland The following newsletter is an abridged version of Campaign Pro's Morning Score. For an earlier morning read on exponentially more races - and for a more comprehensive aggregation of the day's most important campaign news - sign up for Campaign Pro today. (http://www.politicopro.com/proinfo) WOUNDS STILL FRESH - "In Missouri, Ferguson is still burning," by Campaign Pro's Maggie Severns: "...Catherine Hanaway...'I think it started in Ferguson,' she says. Nationally, 'Ferguson' has become a byword for a new American civil rights movement. The protests that followed the shooting death of Michael Brown, an unarmed 18-year-old black man, by a white police officer, marked the birth of the Black Lives Matter movement ...But for many people in Missouri, especially the approximately 600,000 Republicans who expect to vote in the GOP primary Tuesday, the lesson of Ferguson is not that the police used too much force, it's that it used too little. Ferguson, to them, was an embarrassment: preventable chaos that tarnished the name of the otherwise orderly St. Louis suburbs. Those nightly images of lawlessness, in their eyes, were an indictment of the weak-kneed way Democratic Governor Jay Nixon let protesters and outside agitators run amok, looting without apparent consequence. This governor's race, the first major statewide contest since the unrest, is the first chance Missourians have had to register anger that has only grown since the summer of 2014." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=c6f5c3028d0478012a98a2051e9d06de0d702cf990847879f4ab721f6de3beac THE SAGA CONTINUES - "Donald Trump's Confrontation With Muslim Soldier's Parents Emerges as Unexpected Flash Point," by The New York Times' Alexander Burns, Maggie Haberman and Ashley Parker: "Donald J. Trump reeled on Sunday amid a sustained campaign of criticism by the parents of a Muslim American soldier killed by a suicide bomber in Iraq and a rising outcry within his own party over his rough and racially charged dismissal of the couple. The confrontation between the parents, Khizr and Ghazala Khan, and Mr. Trump has emerged as an unexpected and potentially pivotal flash point in the general election. Mr. Trump has plainly struggled to respond to the reproach of a military family who lost a son, and he has repeatedly answered the Khan family's criticism with harsh and defensive rhetoric. And Mr. Trump's usual political tool kit has appeared to fail him." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=c6f5c3028d0478010ffaed6402a7cd22801f7cdc8cc78e08cfdc85fa540c415e - ICYMI - "Ghazala Khan: Trump criticized my silence. He knows nothing about true sacrifice," in the Washington Post: "Here is my answer to Donald Trump: Because without saying a thing, all the world, all America, felt my pain. I am a Gold Star mother. Whoever saw me felt me in their heart." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=c6f5c3028d0478018b8dec715d3f953f60acbf4daa6a976c0289baff1cf03a1c THE SANDERS EFFECT - "Sanders' revolution underway in home-state gubernatorial race," by Campaign Pro's Kevin Robillard in Burlington: "Three Democratic hopefuls - former state Transportation Secretary Sue Minter, former state senator and Google executive Matt Dunne and state Sen. and former ambassador Peter Galbraith - are all running as Sanders-style progressives ahead of the Aug. 9 primary, dropping his name at every opportunity, including in campaign ads. Each of them would represent a sharp break from Democratic Gov. Peter Shumlin ... Dunne's first television ad opens with him speaking directly to the camera: 'Bernie Sanders has started something amazing and I'm running for governor to make his vision a reality right here in Vermont.'" http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=a0619c76d4efb90609b04f03377b4abe094486844b49d9a2950e596ee334ab4b PRE-PRIMARY REPORTS - From Wisconsin ... Republican Mike Gallagher's campaign spent $253,000 ahead of the Aug. 9 primary in Wisconsin's 8th District, where GOP Rep. Reid Ribble is retiring. He raised $102,000 and had $394,000 left in cash on hand on July 20. Gallagher's primary rival, state Sen. Frank Lasee, did not appear to have filed the required pre-primary report with the FEC. On the Democratic side, Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson, who does not face serious opposition in the primary, raised $71,000 in the pre-primary period and spent $153,000. He had $388,000 left in cash on hand. In Wisconsin's 1st District, House Speaker Paul Ryan continues to crush primary opponent Paul Nehlen in cash on hand, with more than $9.5 million in the bank to Nehlen's $176,000. Nehlen did, however, outraise Ryan earlier this month, but only by $76,000. - From Minnesota ... Republicans Jason Lewis and Darlene Miller entered the final two weeks of their campaigns having earned and spent similar amounts of money: Lewis, a former radio talk show host, has raised $358,000, and businesswoman Miller has raised $378,000. Miller entered the final stretch of the primary with $164,000 on hand, and Lewis had $107,000. But Lewis marches towards primary day with two key advantages: Strong name recognition stemming from his days on the radio, and the endorsement of Minnesota GOP. Democrat Angie Craig, who is expected to secure the Democratic nomination, meanwhile had $1.7 million on hand, close to $1 million of which she lent herself. Days until the 2016 election: 98. Days until the Kansas, Michigan, Missouri and Washington State congressional primaries: 1. Thank for joining us. FIRST IN SCORE - U.S. Chamber of Commerce flies to Kansas to endorse Marshall: The Chamber, which has already poured $250,000 into TV ads hitting GOP Rep. Tim Huelskamp, is pulling out all the stops for Roger Marshall in his bid to unseat the incumbent Tuesday. The Chamber is showing up in Manhattan, Kan., (along with the Kansas Farm Bureau, Kansas Livestock Association and other Kansas small businesses) for a 1 p.m. event, boosting Marshall in the final hours ahead of Tuesday's Election Day. "Washington politician Tim Huelskamp is now being held fully accountable for his record of failure," said Rob Engstrom, the Chamber's national political director, adding that "his legacy will be written as a completely ineffective member of Congress who repeatedly attacked the American free enterprise system." On Huelskamp's behalf, several House Freedom Caucus members have stumped for him at home in recent days, and he has gotten outside help from the Club for Growth and the Koch-backed Americans for Prosperity. Debbie Wasserman Schultz no longer runs the DNC, but she still has a Democratic primary to run in South Florida. A new poll, released by her primary rival Tim Canova's campaign, found that just over a third of voters say they view her unfavorably after a week of bad headlines following her resignation as DNC chairwoman, which pollsters FM3 call a "staggering decline" since previous races. Wasserman Schultz still leads by 8 points in the ballot test, with 46 percent backing her and 38 percent supporting Canova. Canova is still largely unknown - 60 percent haven't heard of him, per the poll. His favorables are at 32 percent, while 8 percent view him negatively. "The impact of the last week cannot be understated-more than eight in ten (84%) primary voters are aware of Debbie Wasserman Schultz's resignation as DNC Chair and the leaked emails. Among these voters, nearly half (46%) say they are less likely to vote for her for Congress," per the memo. Fairbank, Maslin, Maullin, Metz & Associates surveyed 400 likely primary voters in telephone interviews from July 27-28, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points. "The ruling also invalidated limits the same state law placed in 2013 on early voting, same-day registration, out-of-precinct voting, and preregistration. The three judges assigned to the case - all Democratic appointees - were unanimous that the Republican-controlled North Carolina legislature violated the U.S. Constitution and the Voting Rights Act three years ago by enacting the measure requiring voters to show certain types of photo ID at the polls. ... The court's opinion bluntly described the legislation as a clear effort to suppress the black vote. 'We cannot ignore the record evidence that, because of race, the legislature enacted one of the largest restrictions of the franchise in modern North Carolina history,' Motz added." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=a0619c76d4efb90654bfaf93c1430c535c6c868078f50b19cd20a7152ee13ce0 - "Judge strikes down Wisconsin voter ID, early voting laws," by the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's Patrick Marley and Jason Stein: "Finding that Republican lawmakers had discriminated against minorities, a federal judge Friday struck down parts of Wisconsin's voter ID law, limits on early voting and prohibitions on allowing people to vote early at multiple sites. With the presidential election less than four months away, GOP Attorney General Brad Schimel said he plans to appeal the sweeping decision by U.S. District Court Judge James Peterson. Peterson also turned back other election laws Republicans have put in place in recent years." Hillary Clinton is focused on turning out the Democratic base in Philadelphia - where Barack Obama won by a 492,000-vote margin in 2012 - and capturing more moderate Republicans in the surrounding suburbs. In the west, Donald Trump has zeroed in southwestern Pennsylvania's coal country and the blue-collar towns around Pittsburgh, banking on big turnout among culturally conservative, disillusioned Democrats. While the state hasn't voted for Republican for president since 1988, it's essential to Trump's Rust Belt strategy." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=a0619c76d4efb9063bc661203d488e1284e878b68facfdea2454daffba6a8b09 - "How Ohio will be won," by POLITICO's Katie Glueck: "Donald Trump is at war with the state party, started organizing late and his support in traditional Republican enclaves here is shaky. But the GOP nominee still has a good shot at winning Ohio, where five of the last eight public polls show him in a dead heat with Hillary Clinton. The reason, political operatives on both sides acknowledge, is that his message is resonating in some traditionally Democratic strongholds. ...In typical Trump fashion, however, there is a catch. He continues to alienate GOP state party leadership, making his chances ever more reliant on the risky bet that enough disillusioned white Democrats and independents will back him to compensate for his under-performance with more centrist Republicans, as well as for Hillary Clinton's advantages in field organization." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=a0619c76d4efb9064182fd822716a046c181006a05307ada9bb66ea74ed58476 - "Nina Turner weighing offer to join Green Party ticket as vice presidential candidate," by the Cleveland Plain Dealer's Henry Gomez: "Nina Turner, the Democratic former state senator from Cleveland who has emerged as a rallying figure for Bernie Sanders' disappointed supporters, said she is considering an offer to run for vice president on the Green Party's national ticket. Massachusetts physician Jill Stein, the party's presumptive presidential nominee, reached out with the pitch, Turner told cleveland.com Sunday evening in a telephone interview. The Green Party opens its convention Thursday in Houston. Turner would stand for nomination there if she agrees to be Stein's running mate. Her decision is expected in the coming days." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=a0619c76d4efb9062fb60195569a64008731e687cfdda129254288ca9ccb7791 - "Trump Boasted In 2014 Of Receiving Gifts From Putin And Meeting His Advisers," by Buzzfeed's Andrew Kaczynski: "On Sunday, Donald Trump denied that he had any relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin in an interview with ABC News. Trump added his previous talk of him having a relationship with Putin was just the two saying nice things about each other. ...In 2014, during a speech at CPAC Trump, though, boasted about meeting with Putin's advisers - even receiving a gift and personal note from Putin during the Miss Universe pageant in Moscow." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=a0619c76d4efb9063edc8ed982ee0b675853bd580e2a3a07f09a11be78ac1884 CODA - QUOTE OF THE DAY: "I want our Republican nominee to succeed," Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake told POLITICO. But "not with the positions he has taken." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=a0619c76d4efb906bf3df438c3e1c0ff7450495b13db8ad94a9fdbe026b8b335 To view online: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=a0619c76d4efb9063e703c3b0d9fb0ffd772c8c5851035fe22c54c4d4998a22a To change your alert settings, please go to http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=a0619c76d4efb906197b7acaccffbbf4f81f1a769a2f83a6982e8316712ad218 or http://click.politicoemail.com/profile_center.aspx?qs=c1c81b2ef644fde1dd3c1f6178ef6a8ea3ee660992025bd401bad0e553ba4e530df5cef3cb95eaefd11ed3c2c82114a5413e599d4ccadac1 This email was sent to Hbiden@rosemontseneca.com by: POLITICO, LLC 1000 Wilson Blvd. Arlington, VA, 22209, USA To unsubscribe,http://www.politico.com/_unsubscribe?e=00000156-4668-d0ae-ab5e-7ffc1ab70000&u=0000014e-f0fe-dd93-ad7f-f8fffbc40000&s=876ba8c9a52ad2fc1cc8256dc331d6d1d473c33b13bbf19df8bf45f909071b7f8ab6cb54f30d089f4cae76ef9d4d26b028c030dfe3006ef969c2d841c5c0fbb9
