(http://www.politicopro.com/proinfo) MINI-TRUMP FALLS IN WISCONSIN - "Ryan crushes Trump-imitating primary foe," by POLITICO's Rachael Bade: "Paul Ryan squashed his Donald Trump-inspired primary opponent on Tuesday, dousing any speculation that he was the next Eric Cantor and demonstrating that his far-right critics have a ways to go to dislodge the highest-ranking elected Republican on his home turf. The speaker of the House was leading longtime factory manager Paul Nehlen, 85 percent to 15 percent, in early returns when The Associated Press declared him the winner. ...The outcome shows while Trump is now the standard bearer of the GOP the party, in some parts of the country - like Ryan's southeast Wisconsin district - Ryan's brand of traditional conservatism still reigns supreme. Nehlen fashioned himself as a mini-Trump, espousing the same sort of anti-trade, anti-immigration ideals that the New York billionaire rode to the nomination. Just last week, Nehlen even went a step further than Trump's proposed temporary ban on Muslim immigration, floating the idea of deporting all Muslims from the country." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=02e1c58bd4ed8d7a4adf1c05ed43819bd2033dc0adeea2868c9ab5d89a6d67d8 - U.S. Chamber of Commerce political director Rob Engstrom particularly enjoying the moment, tweeting: "Paul Nehlen annihilated 85-15. Single most embarrassing loss for fake & self appointed candidates who have 0 support." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=e9690a160d74bcde658f931a58bd279f32b58a3425675a8148f507ec81b5f2df - More Wisconsin results ... "Republican Mike Gallagher will face Democrat Tom Nelson for an open battleground House seat in Wisconsin after Gallagher easily won his GOP primary today. Gallagher, a Marine veteran and former adviser to Gov. Scott Walker, had 72 percent of the primary vote to state Sen. Frank Lasee's 20 percent when The Associated Press called the race with 21 percent of precincts reporting. A third candidate, Terry McNulty, trailed with 8 percent." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=e9690a160d74bcded37b019440a246ee146705dafe47feebe7b79b8974d07ebe - And within minutes of Gallagher's victory, Ryan endorsed him in his race, per a statement from the speaker's campaign. - In Minnesota ... "Jason Lewis won the GOP nomination in retiring Rep. John Kline's district tonight, setting up a battleground-seat clash with Democrat Angie Craig in Minnesota this fall. Lewis had 47 percent of the vote to primary opponent Darlene Miller's 29 percent when The Associated Press called the race with 41 percent of precincts reporting. Lewis has high name recognition in the Minneapolis area after years as a conservative radio host, and he secured the state GOP's endorsement at the party convention earlier this year. But Lewis still faced intense skepticism from some Republicans, including Kline, who believe that his history of brash statements make him a weak general election candidate." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=e9690a160d74bcde78c3b6c3b1968568ca8dfaa0af907e586187459af88db8a0 - In Vermont ... "Former state transportation secretary Sue Minter won the Democratic gubernatorial primary in Vermont tonight, setting up a contest with popular GOP Lt. Gov. Phil Scott in November. Minter had 51 percent of the primary vote when The Associated Press called the race with 66 percent of precincts reporting. Former Google executive Matt Dunne trailed with 38 percent and former Ambassador and State Sen. Peter Galbraith had 10 percent." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=e9690a160d74bcdebbbea11b046d3caafd7c2252556e6effbb8d33bb7c1d6337 POLL WATCH - "New NBC/Wall Street Journal polls conducted by Marist College show Republicans leading Senate races in Ohio and Iowa, while Democrat Katie McGinty has an edge over GOP Sen. Pat Toomey in Pennsylvania. McGinty leads Toomey 48 percent to 44 percent among registered voters, while Ohio GOP Sen. Rob Portman bests former Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland 48 percent to 43 percent. And six-term Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley has a substantial lead over former Lt. Gov. Patty Judge in Iowa, 52 percent to 42 percent. Hillary Clinton leads Donald Trump in all three states, according to the surveys: 48 percent to 37 percent in Pennsylvania, 43 percent to 38 percent in Ohio, and 41 percent to 37 percent in Iowa." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=02e1c58bd4ed8d7af0b41db929db69d2c4a096f213556b2a1a0e489ba4934b80 TRUMP WATCH - "100 days of Trump," by POLITICO's Shane Goldmacher: "In April, a few weeks before Donald Trump became the presumptive Republican nominee, he stood on a stage in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and made a bold prediction. 'At some point, I'm going to be so presidential that you people will be so bored,' he said. ... The remark raised a challenging question about a candidate who had shattered so many of the supposed rules of politics en route to the nomination: How would President Trump behave in the White House? ... What ... emerges from this 100-day review is a Trump outlook less tethered to the traditional left-right ideological spectrum and more to his binary view of winners and losers, the weak and the strong. He praises foreign strongmen like Saddam Hussein and Vladimir Putin, and casts as weak his political opponents. It's one of the reasons Trump seems never to back down, no matter the cost to himself, dragging out controversies around a judge's ethnic heritage (Days 32-36), the use of a Jewish star atop a pile of money (Days 61-65), and his feud with the Muslim-American family of a fallen U.S. soldier (Days 87-92). Those three episodes alone consumed 15 percent of his days." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=02e1c58bd4ed8d7ad36bea729af864b4ef4efecd08562ab9fe297dfafbc2f338 Days until the 2016 election: 90. ADS, ADS, ADS - Strickland runs first television ad: Ohio Democrat Ted Strickland's first television ad of the cycle tells Strickland's life story and touts his policy positions, especially Strickland's anti-free trade stance. "Growing up, his family lost a house in a food and a second to a fire. Ted Strickland learned early in life what one bad break, what one missed paycheck can do to a family," a narrator says. "His dad worked in a steel mill, his brothers finished concrete-that's why he's fought against every bad trade deal, from NAFTA to most favored nation status for China. Now Ted Strickland is running for the U.S. Senate, calling for a moratorium on all new trade deals until we can prove they'll create American jobs." Strickland is going up on the air at a critical moment in the campaign: Opponent Sen. Rob Portman's campaign has been launching frequent attacks Strickland and running its own ads, and Portman secured multiple endorsements from Ohio unions recently. And a poll released Tuesday found Portman with a small lead over Strickland, 48 percent to 43 percent. But Strickland's campaign is only now starting to run its own ads. The Strickland campaign is spending seven figures to run the ad in the Cleveland, Columbus, Toledo and Youngstown media markets. "The NRSC has started TV campaigns in the key swing states of Ohio and Pennsylvania, where the committee has released new attack ads against the Democratic Senate candidates there. In Pennsylvania, the spot attacks Katie McGinty for supporting the nuclear agreement with Iran. Republican executive councilor Chris Sununu will be the first candidate on either side of New Hampshire's governor race to air ads. The 30-second biographical spot focuses on his job running the Waterville Valley ski area. A video shows him clearing trash and making pizza. "No job is too big or too small, and the only way to get things done is to lead by example," Sununu says in the spot, before promising to cut taxes and reduce regulation. "We can do it, but it starts with leadership," he concludes. The ad will air on Fox, WBUR and WBIN. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=02e1c58bd4ed8d7ab2320e689bf4d38d137d6fb2d16f8dbee25238af7e49987a - In NY-22 ... Martin Babinec, the conservative-leaning independent candidate who poured $1 million into his campaign for an upstate New York House seat, is back on TV with a series of new ads. The first 15-second ad opens with text on the screen: "A lesson in creating jobs. From Martin Babinec." "Private investors should fund businesses, not taxpayers," Babinec says. "Government needs to stop picking winners and losers. I'm Martin Babinec and I approve this message, because politicians talk about jobs. I actually create them." Babinec's campaign is spending $44,000 to air the ad this week in the Binghamton, Syracuse and Utica markets, according to an ad-tracking source. Brad Ashford released a new TV spot in his race against Republican Don Bacon, highlighting his work to bring a new veterans health center to Omaha, where his battleground district is based. "I don't take 'no' for an answer. Taking care of veterans was my top priority when I went to Congress," Ashford says, directly addressing the camera. Voters, standing alongside Ashford, said the incumbent "brought Republicans and Democrats together" and "is making a new veterans center a reality." Ashford finishes the ad, saying: "You can accomplish a lot when you don't care which party gets the credit." The ad will air on broadcast and cable stations in Omaha this week. The unprecedented desertion of the GOP nominee by leading members of his own party - and their embrace of Hillary Clinton - is partly organic, but for the most part it's being midwifed by the Clinton campaign, which is beginning to reap the rewards of a behind-the-scenes recruitment effort that's been months in the making. That effort is expected to culminate in the unveiling of an official Republicans for Hillary group as early as Wednesday, by the campaign." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=02e1c58bd4ed8d7a356f3fe5f7e30614d1395218209d447af59907705fd3b91b - "Trump's loaded words fuel campaign freefall," by POLITICO's Eli Stokols: "Barely 24 hours after Donald Trump delivered a speech intended to reset his staggering presidential campaign, his off-the-cuff suggestion that people resort to violence against his opponent has him right back in the ditch. At a rally in North Carolina on Tuesday, Trump applied his signature sarcasm to a political third rail, stating that "the Second Amendment" may be the only way to stop Clinton from getting to appoint federal judges if she defeats him in November. ...The aside, delivered casually, drew light laughter from Trump's crowd but a swift, emphatic rebuke from across the political spectrum, with Republicans and Democrats alike broadcasting their shock." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=02e1c58bd4ed8d7aa0bfd1a9a1e3087d39df479093184fc99f5ab67ac15b53ba - "RNC suffers spate of Trump-related departures," by POLITICO's Daniel Lippman: "The Republican National Committee has seen a spate of departures in recent months related to its embrace of Donald Trump, whom some former staffers felt uncomfortable supporting. In recent months, deputy press secretary James Hewitt, spokesman Fred Brown, director of Hispanic media Ruth Guerra, and research analysts Lars Trautman and Colin Spence have all left the RNC with Trump as one of the reasons for their resignations, according to sources familiar with their decisions. At least three other staff members have also left the RNC with opposition to Trump as a contributing factor, according to multiple sources." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=02e1c58bd4ed8d7a756bf499c6c56c6ee9a718b8243925eb79259559a0111fcb CODA - QUOTE OF THE DAY: "I'm kind of a B-list Republican celebrity." - Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence at a rally Tuesday, via BuzzFeed reporter Tarini Parti's Twitter.
