The Supreme Court ruled Thursday to uphold a program that helped minority students get into the University of Texas, in a decision with sweeping implications for affirmative action-based admissions programs at the nation's public colleges and universities.

In a 4-3 ruling, the court decided that the Texas program that admits some students based on a consideration of race is constitutional.
