To subscribe, please send me an email at aschwartz@csis.org (mailto:aschwartz@csis.org) Note: The Evening CSIS will be “gone fishin’” on Friday, June 24, and will resume publication on Monday, June 27. ** The Waiting is the Hardest Part… ------------------------------------------------------------ After months of bitter campaigning that sharply divided the country over questions of immigration and identity, election day dawned with a cliffhanger on whether Britain will remain in the European Union, as the Washington Post’s Griff Witte, Karla Adam, and Dan Balz report (https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/britons-head-to-the-polls-for-historic-vote-on-eu/2016/06/23/0d466fb0-34a7-11e6-ab9d-1da2b0f24f93_story.html) . Dive Deeper: When will we know? MarketWatch has a good sense (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/when-will-we-know-the-result-of-the-brexit-vote-2016-06-21) . CSIS’s Heather Conley authored a new commentary: “The Choice to Leave or to Remain: Reflections from London (https://www.csis.org/analysis/choice-leave-or-remain-reflections-london) .” ** Attack in Germany ------------------------------------------------------------ A masked assailant apparently armed with a rifle attacked a multiplex movie theater in the German city of Viernheim today and took hostages before he was killed by elite police units that stormed the building. There was no indication the attack was linked to a terrorist plot, officials said, as the New York Times’ Jack Ewing and Melissa Eddy report (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/24/world/europe/germany-movie-theater-attack.html) . CNN also had this report (http://www.cnn.com/2016/06/23/europe/germany-cinema-attack/) on the attack. ** Fighting ISIS ------------------------------------------------------------ US-backed forces entered the ISIS-controlled city of Manbij in Syria for the first time on Thursday, advancing on an area that anchors the extremist group’s last remaining stretch of territory along the Turkish border, as the Wall Street Journal’s Raja Abdulrahim reports (http://www.wsj.com/articles/u-s-backed-forces-in-syria-enter-is-held-city-1466694691) . Dive Deeper: CSIS’s Anthony Cordesman today penned a new commentary: “Obama and the US Strategy in the Middle East: Looking Beyond Syria and ISIS (https://www.csis.org/analysis/obama-and-us-strategy-middle-east) .” ** Panama Canal ------------------------------------------------------------ The New York Times has published an extraordinary new interactive report on the new Panama Canal (http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/06/22/world/americas/panama-canal.html) . ** In That Number ------------------------------------------------------------ ** 10 ------------------------------------------------------------ The number of suspected Islamist militants that Moroccan authorities arrested today. Source: Reuters (http://www.reuters.com/article/us-morocco-security-idUSKCN0Z92IH) . ** Critical Quote ------------------------------------------------------------ ** “The United States needs to do far more than simply taking a stronger stand in dealing with the immediate fighting in Syria and its narrow focus on ISIS. Yes, ISIS (ISIL, Daesh) is a very real threat, but so is al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula—which is the primary extremist threat to Saudi Arabia. Syria is a terrible human tragedy, but so are Iraq, Libya, and Yemen.” ------------------------------------------------------------ —CSIS’s Anthony H. Cordesman on the need to look beyond Syria and ISIS. Source: CSIS (https://www.csis.org/analysis/obama-and-us-strategy-middle-east) . ** One to Watch ------------------------------------------------------------ US special envoy for the global coalition to counter ISIL Brett McGurk on the Syria border today facing ISIL affiliate Yarmouk Martyrs Brigade, now designated (http://www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/ps/2016/06/258264.htm) as a global terrorist entity. ** Optics ------------------------------------------------------------ (Photo by Jason Miller/Getty Images.) LeBron James celebrates during the Cleveland Cavaliers 2016 championship victory parade and rally yesterday in Cleveland. ** Highly Recommended ------------------------------------------------------------ Via the Wall Street Journal, “Israel Builds Railway in Hope of Boosting Commerce with Arab Neighbors (http://www.wsj.com/articles/israel-builds-railway-in-hope-of-boosting-commerce-with-arab-neighbors-1466614190?mod=djem10point) ,” by Orr Hirschauge and Rory Jones. ** CSIS Today ------------------------------------------------------------ CSIS’s International Security Program hosted “Priorities for Our Nation’s Army with US Army Chief of Staff General Mark A. Milley (https://www.csis.org/events/priorities-our-nations-army-general-mark-milley) .” CSIS’s Global Health Policy Center hosted “After the Ebola Frenzy: Media Lessons for Zika (https://www.csis.org/events/after-ebola-frenzy-media-lessons-zika) .” ** CSIS Tomorrow ------------------------------------------------------------ Join CSIS’s International Security Program tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. for “Fleet Design in the Current Environment with Admiral Philip Davidson (https://www.csis.org/events/fleet-design-current-environment-admiral-philip-davidson) .” And join CSIS’s Project on Prosperity and Development at 10:00 a.m. for “My Story Book Launch with Andrei Sannikov (https://www.csis.org/events/my-story-book-launch-andrei-sannikov) .” ** This Town Tomorrow ------------------------------------------------------------ Join AEI tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. for "Pathways to global progress: A conversation with Melinda Gates (http://www.aei.org/events/pathways-to-global-progress-a-conversation-with-melinda-gates/) ." ** CSIS On Demand ------------------------------------------------------------ CSIS’s Thomas Karako joined NHK World to discuss North Korea’s latest missile launch (http://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20160623_12/) . ** Sounds ------------------------------------------------------------ CSIS's Gregory Poling joined the Global Dispatches podcast to discuss the "Trouble Brewing in the South China Sea (http://www.globaldispatchespodcast.com/trouble-brewing-in-the-south-china-sea/) ." (http://podcast.ft.com/2016/06/22/what-next-for-modis-india/) ” ** I Like It Like That ------------------------------------------------------------ The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) wants to know: What happens when everyone has drones? Take their drone survey (http://drones.cnas.org/drone-survey/) and tell them what you think. ** Smiles ------------------------------------------------------------ “It’s as much yours, as it is ours.” I’ve been asked quite a bit about the lawsuit alleging that Led Zeppelin stole “Stairway to Heaven.” I didn’t want to write about it because it’s such a bunch of nonsense and such a frown. Led Zeppelin didn’t lift “Stairway” from anyone. It’s a song that has no equal and could only have been created as we know it by the group that created it. Of course, the jury agreed. In 1983, while performing “Stairway” with Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck at a concert in New York in support of Action into Research for Multiple Sclerosis (ARMS), Jimmy Page said it best. Stairway, Page told a cheering audience, is “as much yours as it is ours.” Can you imagine how many people have smiled because of “Stairway to Heaven (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhf4hEGMr1w) ”? Does anybody remember laughter? ** Feedback ------------------------------------------------------------ I always welcome and benefit from your feedback.
