Keep Your Credit Cards Safe from Fraud http://click.email.allclearid.com/?qs=728fc266dcbb34562d8218757bc50e058779a70f21de11c4712c03536a3220ba In light of the recent security incident at a large payment processor for several major credit card brands, here are our top tips to protect your credit card. 1. Check your statements frequently. Luckily, for credit cards after fraud has occurred, there is no time limit to report fraud. Your maximum liability is $50, or $0 if the fraud involves your credit card number, but not the card itself. Check the FTC website for more details. 1. Set up transaction alerts. Almost all banks offer the ability to receive customized email or text message notifications for a number of things including when: - Your credit card account exceeds an activity limit that you choose - Your available credit card balance drops below a certain amount - A purchase is made over a limit that you choseWe recommend receiving an alert any time a purchase is made on your account. To sign yourself up for alerts, sign into your account online and look for an "alerts" link or page. The location varies depending on the company, but here are the information pages for some of the major banks and credit card companies. - http://click.email.allclearid.com/?qs=728fc266dcbb34564d7cda68b94833e40d48e0fe7bcfd522322b053626a40009 Wells Fargo - http://click.email.allclearid.com/?qs=728fc266dcbb34561d95c2ff8d8a7078ef9277cfe619d511eea274278f8cf18c Bank of America - http://click.email.allclearid.com/?qs=728fc266dcbb345613a7de69464e546c03a0297c7ee216baa23884ce036d5959 Chase - http://click.email.allclearid.com/?qs=728fc266dcbb345613a7de69464e546c03a0297c7ee216baa23884ce036d5959 American Express 1. http://click.email.allclearid.com/?qs=728fc266dcbb34562d8218757bc50e058779a70f21de11c4712c03536a3220ba Download the free AllClear ID iPhone App : Our Fraud Detection alerts you when your personal information is reported stolen including credit card numbers. Everywhere you go online, the sites you visit and what you see are all being tracked. Tracking your behavior to figure out what you might buy isn’t new: direct marketers, like the ones that send you coupons in the mail, have been doing thisfor years. But the online world captures a big amount of your day-to-day activity, from socializing with friends to searching the Web. By combining the online and offline data, the amount of information marketers can determine about you is huge. There are free tools to help limit the amount of information you share: - The best place to start is with your web browser. All browsers offer tools that let you block cookies. To change your privacy settings, hit the “Tools” or “Settings” button on your browser and choose a privacy level. - Many advertisers have joined a voluntary program that will search your system to tell you how many ad networks have planted cookies on your browser, and allow you to block some or all of them. If you want to opt out of advertising cookies, go to http://click.email.allclearid.com/?qs=728fc266dcbb345694917da7e2583b05fb341f5160cfdd262f330758494e9ced www.aboutads.info to find out how. Also realize that everything you do on the Internet could become public eventually. Even if a website you’re on has a strict privacy policy, these policies can – and do – change. The best measure to take: Stop sharing data online that you don’t want to be public. http://click.email.allclearid.com/?qs=728fc266dcbb3456066317b17fa9bfebdd3d2ca26af3a5f19538082da050b88a Read more tips to protect your online presence on the blog! Craigslist Scam Involving Google Checkout Anyone thinking of making purchase on Craigslist soon needs to exercise caution. There is a scam going on involving Google Checkout and out-of-state purchases. If you fall for it, the scammer ends up with your identity including name and address, plus your money, while you get nothing in return. How it works: - The scammer lists an item on Craigslist, commonly a motor vehicle like an ATV, a pickup truck, or a small car or motorcycle. - The price is well below market value, and they have a story about why they are selling it so cheaply. - Once you indicate interest, the scammer will tell you that the vehicle is ready for shipping to your address from an out-of-state location. All you have to do is provide your name and shipping address, and then everything will be set up via Google Checkout. - If you ask to see the item, they will say that it’s already in storage ready to be shipped, so you can’t meet them or take a look at it. - They ask you to provide the information to Google Checkout, say you will have a quick grace period to make a final decision, and that Google Checkout will hang on to the money until you give them the go ahead to complete the transaction. The entire story is a scam: once you put the money and your identity details into Google Checkout, you won't see it again. While Google Checkout is a legitimate service, these scammers are using a dummy website. So be wary of any requests to send money, and your identity, to buy a product out of state or sight unseen.
