Bunker Labs, a 501c3 non-profit, supports early stage veteran led companies with meaningful connections, discounted startup services and a collaborative learning environment. We are here to connect, educate and inspire the greatest leaders our country has, our veterans and military.

We are excited to host our second "Bunker Brews" event where we aim to educate, inspire and connect our veteran community in order to help us realize our full entrepreneurial potential.

Our June guest speaker is co-founder and former CEO of The Hub, John New. John was previously an infantry and logistics officer in the US Army and helped grow The Hub to one of the leading corporate office space solutions in Philadelphia prior to a recent successful exit. John will discuss the factors that help lead his company to success, what his transition was like from boots to boardroom, what kept his team innovative and provide an overview on the Real Estate Market in Philadelphia

Josh Kopelman Breaks down "Why You Don't Want VC Money"

The Bunker Labs inaugural cohort, dubbed "The Founders" was joined June 1st by the Founder of First Round Capital, Josh Kopelman. Josh leads one of the top 10 VC's in the country, and has invested in such companies as Uber, Mint, and Task Rabbit. Josh, an experienced entrepreneur himself, was the founder of Half.com and Turn Tide.

Josh provided valuable insight in to how VC's look at your business, and why larger Venture Capital funds need to not just get a home run, "but we want a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth of the World Series". With this massive exit requirement, Kopelman explained why his organization passes on 99% of the companies they meet with.

"They either aren't in a big enough market, or your idea isn't disruptive enough. We want to try to find companies that are contrarians, and are right, and have some "secret" that they believe is true that the entrenched players disagree with."

Kopelman spent more than an hour with "The Founders" - here are a couple other nuggets:
* Raise more money at the seed level
* Be rational about the money you want to raise at the A Level
* Know who you are pitching and what types of businesses they invest in and at what stage
* Practice your pitch- put in 4 weeks of preparation

Our Bunker PHL Company Spotlight this month is Starchup. This innovative technology company has roots in both Chicago and Philadelphia, is a SaaS company that builds web and mobile delivery management tools for the laundry and dry cleaning industry.

One of the co-founders and COO, Dan Tobon, gained exposure to the laundromat industry after working with his father who was an executive in a firm. "I realized that it was a pretty big industry, but also fragmented and one that really needed technological upgrades," said Tobon.

Tobon brings a unique blend of military experience as well as an education in law, and credits both experiences with his ability to think on his feet, adapt to pressure and yet have excellent attention to detail. Dan served in the US Army in both recon and as a sniper, and served in Iraq. "Being in the military taught me how to keep moving forward to achieve my goals no matter what adversity I'm faced with," added Tobon.

Starchup recently raised $400k for their seed round, and they are looking for an additional investment of $100k. They have expanded their relationship with Proctor & Gamble, and now have a partnership in place in South Africa.
