The Third Annual "Heart & Soul" Awards Luncheon, Celebrating Dance on
Broadway, in Palm Beach on Thursday, March 15 was a huge success at
Club Colette which seated 148 of our enthusiastic patrons. Click

Chaired by Anka Palitz, Vicki Kellogg and Cheryl Gowdy, $81,449.05
was raised. Congratulations to all!

Jane Powell introduced our hard-working chairs, honorary chairs,
supporters and benefactors too numerous to name, and the fantastic
dance students from the Dreyfoos School of the Performing Arts
performed under the leadership of Jan Hanniford with choreography by
Margo Sappington. The students presented hit numbers from Sweet
Charity, A Chorus Line, and Chicago. Former CTFD dancer-client Daniel
May, now a lawyer, gave a heartfelt testimonial. Auctioneer Simon
Teakle charmed the patrons and raised $9,400. Anka presented this
year's "Heart & Soul Awards" to Patrick Park and Dick Robinson, and
Hermes De Wyman Miro selected names out of a crystal bowl to
distribute the door prizes.

Let's raise our glasses to toast Anka, Vicki, and Cheryl for making
this day very special to remember. Let us remember that it was our
dear Anka's brilliant idea to have a luncheon in 2010 to heighten the
awareness of Career Transition For Dancers' programs and services for
dancers. Anka, we salute you!

The net proceeds raised will continue to provide for vital career
counseling, and scholarships for education, entrepreneurial endeavors
and certifications for dancers in need. We are so grateful to
everyone for continuing to make dancers' dreams become realities.

The Importance of Being Prepared

Perhaps there was something to the Scout motto: Always be prepared.
I was kicked out of my troop which is probably why I wasn't prepared
when I faced my own career transition. Today, as the new Director of
Development & Communications at Career Transition For Dancers, I've
written about it on our blog. I hope my story, "Something Funny
Happened on the Way to My Life," will serve as a source of
inspiration.

Since I was 13, my dance teachers, parents, and friends all
encouraged me to pursue a professional career in dance. I was good.
I was very good. I believed a life of dance was meant for me. I
also felt invincible. I started out as a classical ballet dancer and
was focused on that path from age 5 to 17. It's all I knew and when
it fell apart I thought my life was over... at 17.

I studied at the School of American Ballet, and then with Melissa
Hayden at STEPS 60 on Broadway. I also began auditioning for
companies. After a Houston Ballet audition, a producer from the
movie "Fame" approached me and asked me to read for the part of the
ballerina; I didn't get the part but I continued to audition for
other companies. The stars were aligned and my future looked
bright...until I landed wrong in a jump and badly sprained my ankle.
It took a split second for my entire life to change. I returned too
soon to dance and re-sprained it, then re-sprained it for a third
time. It was the first time that I was forced to think outside the
world of dance and I had no idea what I would or even could do.
