By Theodoric Meyer | 06/24/2016 10:00 AM EDT With Elena Schneider, Kevin Robillard, Maggie Severns and Scott Bland The following newsletter is an abridged version of Campaign Pro's Morning Score. For an earlier morning read on exponentially more races - and for a more comprehensive aggregation of the day's most important campaign news - sign up for Campaign Pro today. (http://www.politicopro.com/proinfo) BREXIT - "British voters just unleashed an economic and political tsunami," by Joseph J. Schatz and Ben White: "British voters didn't just shock the world and the financial markets by voting to leave the European Union hours ago: They also ignored President Barack Obama, handed Hillary Clinton a potential economic burden and injected new energy into the populist currents roiling politics on both sides of the Atlantic." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=5d0cbf6b491643060fe279a9a14c0f0b2ab76b3121e4e915c2948ed89adac01a - Full coverage: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=86733d6abc077efafbba8f597fb9590d307b1ee1eccf4c7a6a8ee127f9099db3 PLAYING HOUSE? - "Trump fuels Democrats' slim House hopes," by Campaign Pro's Theodoric Meyer: "Democrats are scrambling to make the most of the unexpected yet narrow opportunity Donald Trump has given them to challenge for the House majority. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee this week capped a late recruiting surge, which began as Trump gained momentum in the GOP presidential race, by adding a final candidate in Florida before Friday's filing deadline. But most of all, it is scrutinizing under-the-radar House districts, many featuring little-known and cash-starved Democratic candidates who haven't gotten attention from Washington thus far, to try and get their campaigns in fighting shape in case Trump's struggles create a down-ballot wave they could ride." - "Some Democrats see a narrow road to the majority, but the party is playing catch-up .... There are now 40 Republican-held districts around the country where Democratic candidates have at least $100,000 in their campaign accounts, according to the latest campaign finance disclosures. But at this point in the 2010 election, Republicans had more than 80 candidates above that $100,000 benchmark in Democratic-held districts. The GOP went on to win 63 seats and flip the House." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=5d0cbf6b4916430665435418026be520e88961e049179f5c8a60575d295de7b4 - Stephanie Murphy, a former Defense Department staffer who immigrated from Vietnam as an infant, will challenge GOP Rep. John Mica in Florida's 7th District, a suburban Orlando seat that Democrats believe will be newly competitive with Trump on the ballot. In an interview, Murphy presented herself as more in touch with the changing district than Mica, a 12-term incumbent. "I don't think it's really about John," she said. "This is district is a lot different than it was when John was first elected." She also called for preventing those on the "No Fly" list from buying guns in the aftermath of the Pulse nightclub shooting, which happened just feet from the border of the redrawn district. The DCCC immediately added her to its "Red to Blue" list of candidates it's backing. - Democrats are also working aggressive to recruit a new candidate to challenge GOP Rep. Mike Bishop, who represents a swing district in the Detroit suburbs. The DCCC has made multiple trips to Michigan since Melissa Gilbert, an actress whose campaign never took off, dropped out last month for health reasons. A source says local Democrats are meeting with potential replacement candidates this week, including Suzanna Shkreli, an assistant prosecuting attorney in neighboring Macomb County and Kate Logan, an Iraq veteran who worked as the Michigan state director for Veterans for Bernie. PRIMARY PREVIEW - "Five-way Colorado GOP field a toss-up in Senate primary," by Campaign Pro's Elena Schneider: "Colorado's GOP Senate race is a five-sided coin flip. That's the conclusion more than a dozen Republican strategists reached in the final days of this muddled primary, one that has been dominated not by the candidates' positive attributes but by their various problems - from fundraising difficulties to legal issues to others that were simply strange. 'Sen. Michael Bennet has won the Republican primary,' said one frustrated Colorado GOP operative." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=5d0cbf6b4916430636d35c6401f12d941a6d5bfd7f43385f759fc08f488f0c7f Days until the 2016 election: 137. "Ohio's coal miners are under attack," a narrator says. "And Ted Strickland stands with liberal politicians who are trying to destroy our way of life. The choice is clear: Rob Portman. He's fighting to protect Ohio jobs and move our economy forward." Kelly Ayotte in New Hampshire also takes time to boost her Democratic opponent, Gov. Maggie Hassan. The first 10 seconds of the ad highlight Hassan's support for "New Hampshire priorities." The narrator then criticizes Ayotte for voting to turn Medicaid "into a voucher program" and says she "supported tax breaks for the wealthy." The super PAC also debuted a new ad in Ohio on Thursday attacking GOP Sen. Rob Portman for "trying to rewrite his record" on Social Security. Watch the New Hampshire ad: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=86733d6abc077efadf0e5f28826e643a6cf354f4fae005da0777b77e6bd61cbf Watch the Ohio ad: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=86733d6abc077efabe7f0863f8a31fc97c323beb61e53ccdd375d0906972bddb - One Nation praises Heck in new ad: The Republican nonprofit One Nation is out with the latest in a series of issuing ads boosting GOP Senate candidates. The newest, "Green Zone," again links Rep. Joe Heck, Republicans' nominee in Nevada, to the popular Gov. Brian Sandoval and praises them both for their work to help military members and their families: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=86733d6abc077efa0e2c1649a6a183961849b3e50f5ce9944eb6fef8ff268c55 DOWN THE BALLOT - Sanders, Cruz step up to help House candidates: Bernie Sanders and Ted Cruz are turning their attention to House primaries after missing out on their parties' presidential nominations. Sanders will appear at a rally for Eric Kingson, a Syracuse University professor who's locked in a three-way Democratic primary in upstate New York, in Syracuse this evening. Kingson is one of a number of House candidates Sanders has endorsed. - And Cruz has endorsed Mike Crane, a Georgia state senator who also has the support on the House Freedom Caucus as he seeks retiring Rep. Lynn Westmoreland's safely Republican seat. Crane is facing Drew Ferguson, the former mayor of West Point, in a GOP primary runoff in July. OOPS, I POLLED IT AGAIN - North Carolina Senate race still tight: GOP Sen. Richard Burr continues to lead Democrat Deborah Ross by a slim margin. For the second month, Burr tops Ross by 3 points, per a new Public Policy Polling survey. Less than a third approve of his job performance, while 40 percent disapprove. But few voters know Ross - 62 percent have no opinion of her yet. The poll surveyed 947 registered voters from June 20 to June 21, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2 percentage points. Here's the full polling memo: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=86733d6abc077efae61445da9cf795590c5198e6daef3133de22f749dc3766fd - WAY DOWN THE BALLOT - Dem internal has Arpaio trailing: An internal survey conducted by Strategies 360 for Democrat Paul Penzone shows him leading Maricopa County Joe Arpaio in a general-election matchup. The poll has Penzone up 48 percent to 44 percent, while Donald Trump leads Hillary Clinton 44 percent to 39 percent and GOP Sen. John McCain is up 50 percent to 35 percent in Arizona's most populous county. (For reference, Mitt Romney won Maricopa by 11 percentage points on his way to winning Arizona by 9 points in 2012.) Full poll results here: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=86733d6abc077efa307f3608e736cef217b06ca1168a0a38bd03fe9223dbd612 PRESIDENTIAL SPEED READ - "Bernie Sanders' Clinton-free speech," by POLITICO's Gabriel Debenedetti in New York: "Bernie Sanders answered the question of what exactly he's going to be doing between now and the Democratic National Convention on Thursday night: Beating up on the Democratic establishment, rather than Hillary Clinton. Speaking to a raucous crowd of diehard supporters who were lined up hours ahead of the start time at the small Town Hall theater here - many carrying #BernieorBust signs and wearing #HillNo buttons, screaming to push him toward a third-party run - the vanquished presidential candidate said he would soon set out across the country campaigning for like-minded, down-ballot candidates." But Sanders didn't mention Clinton's name once, and it took more than an hour for Donald Trump's name to come up. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=86733d6abc077efa52af762bb1117f0539bd3cac40f4f787b86f1feccc224790 - "Never Trump movement gets little help from convention rules panel roster," by POLITICO's Kyle Cheney: "The Republican National Committee has released the list of the 112 members of the upcoming convention rules committee - a panel that will be the focal point of a struggle by anti-Donald Trump delegates to block the mogul's nomination at the Republican National Convention next month. But Trump foes hoping the panel will help their cause are in for a disappointment, as the roster is stacked with officials who publicly support making Trump the nominee." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=86733d6abc077efa7dd78d6d20bf3c2cb093d6df4d691ca2d69c75d3c5a75dfd - "Donor says Trump campaign voiced support for super PAC," by The Wall Street Journal's Rebecca Ballhaus: "Donald Trump's campaign is voicing its support for a super PAC funded by hedge-fund manager Robert Mercer, according to a top donor, effectively giving its blessing to one of the slew of outside groups that have cropped up to support the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. ... Tech billionaire Darwin Deason, along with his son, Doug, and wife, Katerina, met with Mr. Trump and his top aides during the New York businessman's swing through Texas last week, Doug Deason said in an interview. During the meeting, the Deasons asked Mr. Trump and his aides whether the campaign planned to endorse one of the several super PACs that have said they're raising money to back him. In response, Steven Mnuchin, Mr. Trump's national finance chairman, said the campaign preferred donors give to the Mercer-backed super PAC, Mr. Deason said." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=86733d6abc077efa207a24629b9b4d0155dce008ed57b0695272b028d5449f97 CODA - QUOTE OF THE DAY: "Yesterday he was a lame-duck prime minister; today he's a dead-duck prime minister." - John Mann, a Labour Party MP in Britain, on Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron's political standing after British defied his call to remain in the European Union. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=86733d6abc077efa3813592b6f2c4688fe65ee673c3a8e7859ae6464faf86047 ** A message from Sinclair Broadcast Group: News, opinions, and entertainment surround us 24/7, yet a fundamental truth remains, whether for competitive races or impactful ballot measures, the TV commercial reigns as the medium for reaching potential voters.
