Tuesday - May 1, 2012 From the School This Week's Query How can I be the best I can be without becoming stressed? Notes from Sally Assembly: The Suspicious Cheese Lords In addition, all Middle School students will hear a presentation from Laura Ratner on Wednesday morning on the topic of helping students develop a healthy relationship to food and their bodies. 6th graders’ language choices and 7th graders’ arts choices for next year should be in Educator by the end of this week. All 6th graders are invited to a party on Friday evening from 7-9 at the Lower School in Bethesda, and the Parent Peer Group meeting will run concurrently. Needed: Student face painters for the Lower School Spring Festival, 3-5 PM on Saturday. If you can help, contact Michael Borkowski: mborkowski247@gmail.com A group of 8th grade students has taken the lead in planning a dance marathon next Friday evening to benefit Children’s Hospital. The dance will be held in the Dining Room from 6-10 PM. 8th graders will have their hangout earlier in the afternoon. 5th and 6th graders are welcome to join in the fun from 6 – 7:30 PM as well. I am proud of these students for taking the lead to plan this activity and hope that we will have a good turnout of students to support this effort – and to have a good time! Students are receiving pledge forms through their homerooms or advisories, but there is no set amount that students must try to raise; what’s important participation and support of any kind. It’s nearly yearbook time, and students with outstanding library fines will not be able to receive their yearbooks until their library records are clear. Please encourage your children to come pay their fines in the library as soon as they can. Report cards also will not be issued to students with outstanding fines. We are also beginning to work on the collection of laptops for students in grades 6-8. All students must turn in their laptop, power cord, and bag in good condition or pay the fee for missing equipment before the final report card will be issued. This is a great time to check to be sure that your child has the right equipment and to begin thinking about any files that should be moved off the laptop and on to a flash drive for retention past the end of the school year. 6th grade parents: As your child gets closer to the transition to 7th grade, teachers will be using the interim system more for communicating concerns about academic performance. Interims are accessed through Educator Online. You will receive an email if your son or daughter has gotten an interim report. As we look toward the new year, I would like to announce a slight change in the length of the school day for next year. Middle School will close at 3:30 instead of 3:20 on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and at 2:00 on Tuesday. This will allow Hearst traffic to clear on 37th Street before our dismissal. We will be sending more information about the particulars of the schedule during the spring and summer. Do you have ideas for good assemblies for next year? I am always interested in your suggestions – please send them along! Many of our best programs have come from student or parent ideas. We could not publish this newsletter each week without the hard work of a dedicated group of parent volunteers who compile the announcements and publish the Tuesday Letter. A huge thank you to the members of this group: Kara Sacilotto, Maryann Nash, Belai Negash, Donna Osborn, and Helen Saxenian! We all have the capacity of being sons and daughters, sisters and brothers, uncles and aunts, wives and husbands, metaphorically if not through blood-relationships. As well we are all both teachers and learners, both thinkers and workers, both employees and employers, nurses, parents and neighbours. We are most fortunate in being friends and lovers. True friendships grow in depth, understanding and mutual respect, as friends value 'that of God' in one another.
