Marc, Good timing for all of us! Japanese Pension Funds Increasing Alt Investments A new survey indicates that Japanese pension funds are planning to invest more in hedge funds. Bloomberg reported that the survey conducted by JPMorgan Chase's Tokyo-based asset management unit found over 20% of Japanese pension funds plan to boost their investments in alternative assets, including hedge funds and private equity funds. The article then said that pension funds are investing more despite the recent controversy of Tokyo-based AIJ Investment Advisors allegedly losing more than $1 billion for its pension fund clients after offering them hedge fund strategies. 53% of the pension funds surveyed said that the AIJ scandal affected their investments, and 67% said they will implement some sort of preventative measure as a result. The article also said Japanese pensions have traditionally invested mostly in bonds, and their interest in hedge fund investments to maintain steady returns is a recent development.
