EHR Adoption Accelerates for Physicians and Slows in Hospitals -- According to a
recent report by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the adoption
of electronic health records by Medicare physicians is accelerating while simultaneously
slowing in hospitals. In addition, the report noted that the cumulative incentive
payments for EHR adoption by physicians have reached just over one-half a billion
dollars, or $636 million -- a 57 percent increase over the prior month. At the
same time, hospital payments rose to $1.4 billion or 10 percent more than the prior
month. The fall off in hospital trends is most likely due to the fact that they
have been at it longer than physician offices. But, that's only my opinion ...
I have no data.
In related news, CMS noted that physicians and other eligible professionals still
wanting to appeal their eligibility determinations for the 2011 Medicare electronic
health-record incentive payment program were granted an extra month to file the
appeals. The extension deadline was April 30.
What's Up With Microsoft and GE? -- The recent announcement by Microsoft and GE
on their joint venture [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001NGUFqPshmtRQQkD_emNIvTPmxRZ7Er2PrVAr-50kxsTbxYTEGbjzo0KSR0FU6DIu1fJRpv-mdUF6ewLmDxsz4MPfLwB5Qzooqt3ouUgO6l2DJ_ryLJsj0R9Y4hoWv8ld]
raised the question -- can two companies who are incredibly successful finally develop
or deploy a product that meets the test of market place demand? So, we've all been
watching and the first news out of both offices was that there was a significant
personnel cut for the new Microsoft and GE initiative. None of the physicians
from the Microsoft side were invited to the new company with Brandon Savage, MD
serving as the only remaining physician. The remainder of the clinical side also
saw some deep cuts, so it's going to be interesting how the new joint venture prepares
itself for a strong informatics play. Finally, the role for Intermountain is unclear
in the new "Caradigm." I learned long ago never to underestimate the big boys ...
so, we all wait with anticipation.

I am occasionally asked whether the work of informatics will be "done" when everyone
is finishing implementing electronic health record (EHR) systems. Sometimes the
query is further qualified by, "once everyone gets their HITECH money."

My answer is always an emphatic "No!" There is no question that some informatics
implementation activity may slow down when healthcare organizations are no longer

A Consideration

Perhaps, we're focused on the wrong thing? While healthcare is important, there
may be other elements of society that create the healthcare problem? Some thoughts
for consideration ...

Last week, I met with a friend and colleague who is involved in literacy. She has
been involved in the Dallas-Fort Worth area for many years teaching English as a
second language. The conversation started because I had heard on a program the
previous weekend that only 53 percent of 9th graders enrolled in the Washington,
D.C., school system complete high school in four years. I was appalled, but she
said, "Oh, but that's the way it is ... "
The statistics she cited were haunting for society and healthcare. Here are a few

Musings from a foodie ...

So, I usually do a review of restaurants. But, this week, I decided to change the
pace and consider another topic which has been in the back of my mind for some time
-- antioxidants! I suspect that most of think about antioxidants as fruit -- blueberries,
pomegranates, and the like -- right? And, you're absolutely on track. It's just
that I've recently learned that spices are also a plentiful source of antioxidants.
Yes, your favorites -- oregano, turmeric, cinnamon and clove -- are all rich in
heart-healthy antioxidants. In fact, just a half-teaspoon of cloves has as many
antioxidants as one-half cup of blueberries. This may be the best bit of news
I've passed along in some time [].
There's even research from Penn State suggesting that the antioxidant boost gained
by overlaying fatty food with a heavily spiced flavor may, in fact, cancel out some
of the negative effects of the fat. Does that make you want to have a spicy steak?
And that's not all spices can offer. Look at cinnamon. It's a hugely popular spice
(and delicious on baked apples) that's not only packed with antioxidants, but also
has all sorts of anti-microbial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-tumor, blood pressure-lowering,
cholesterol and lipid-lowering, and gastro-protective properties. Wow! Food is an
antidote to life, it seems.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

The Good - There is optimism spreading across Africa that the malaria scourge may
be coming under some degree of control. The sharp decline in deaths and illness
from malaria is bringing some hope that Africa could potentially turn the corner
in its economic development thereby bringing renewed hope among the nations of the
world that the people of Africa could benefit in a global economy.

The Bad - At the same time that malaria deaths and illness are declining, there
is growing evidence that drug resistance by the plasmodium falciparum parasite,
