By Emily Schultheis (eschultheis@politico.com; Twitter: @emilyrs) With Jose DelReal EXCLUSIVE-BILL CLINTON HELPS OUT MIKE ROSS: Former President Bill Clinton is lending a hand to a fellow Arkansas governor hopeful this morning. In an email to supporters of Democrat Mike Ross's campaign, Clinton will talk about his own relationship with Ross and says he'll make a great governor: 'When I was running for governor of Arkansas in 1982, a talented and energetic young man named Mike Ross was a big help to me and my campaign. Mike drove me all over the state and I became close friends with him. I even had a hunch that someday he might run for governor himself,' Clinton writes. 'Take it from someone who knows a thing or two about being governor of Arkansas: Mike Ross will be a great one.' The email is Clinton's first public involvement in a governor's race since his big campaign swing with now-Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe last fall. (He's also helping out Kentucky Democratic Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes.) AFP PUTS FOCUS ON HAGAN: POLITICO'S Manu Raju and Anna Palmer look at conservative group Americans for Prosperity's particular focus on the North Carolina Senate race: "[AFP] has already dropped $8.2 million on TV, radio and digital ads in an effort to defeat the North Carolina Democrat ... while AFP won't predict the amount it will ultimately spend in North Carolina, if the conservative group keeps the same pace, it'll spend more than $27 million by Election Day in the Tar Heel State. That's more than twice what any outside group has spent in the past dozen years in North Carolina congressional races. The staggering figures make North Carolina ground zero in the unprecedented TV war expected to define the 2014 midterm elections." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=8b95c49d0f5d24243e5b63498ed87d3429fabcf101bc347451fb79f5b902fd24 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=8b95c49d0f5d24243e5b63498ed87d3429fabcf101bc347451fb79f5b902fd24 ABOUT LAST NIGHT-FAULCONER WINS IN SAN DIEGO: The San Diego Union-Tribune has the results: "Republican City Councilman Kevin Faulconer won a decisive victory over Democratic Councilman David Alvarez in the San Diego mayor's race Tuesday, signaling a new chapter for the city after the scandal-plagued tenure of former Mayor Bob Filner. Faulconer had 54.5 percent compared to Alvarez's 45.5 percent of the vote with all precincts reporting. ... Faulconer ... becomes the only Republican mayor of a top 10 U.S. city, making him one of the party's highest-profile leaders in the state." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=68d14e6f0f13905a710c6339e1796fac4d2c6ab28ae5cba44d365ec6346d024b http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=68d14e6f0f13905a710c6339e1796fac4d2c6ab28ae5cba44d365ec6346d024b PELOSI FOCUSES ON WINNING WOMEN IN '14: POLITICO's John Bresnahan and Seung Min Kim examine House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's outreach efforts among women: "The strategy is aimed squarely at a demographic Democrats need to win: women - especially single women who tend to vote for them, and who often stay home during midterm elections. Getting women to the ballot box in higher numbers may be the only hope for Pelosi, who last wielded the speaker's gavel in 2010, and who most political observers believe is a long shot - at the very best - in 2014 to reclaim it ... As House Democrats start their annual retreat on Wednesday in Cambridge, Md., Pelosi argues that they should focus intensely on issues of pay equity, preventing women from being fired or demoted while pregnant or on maternity leave, and extending scholarships for single women who want to further their education." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=68d14e6f0f13905aa7f20b78e1f480d4cd5f6fac5ebc56b062850adc970ef26d http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=68d14e6f0f13905aa7f20b78e1f480d4cd5f6fac5ebc56b062850adc970ef26d HAPPENING TODAY-Vice President Joe Biden is in Florida to raise money for FL-13 Democratic candidate Alex Sink. FIRST IN SCORE-SULLIVAN RADIO AD FEELS THE ALASKA 'LOVE': In honor of Valentine's Day this Friday, Alaska GOP Senate candidate Dan Sullivan is out with a "Love"-themed radio ad, a positive spot describing what brought him to Alaska and the work he's done since he arrived. "I moved to Alaska over 16 years ago, after meeting my wife, Julie Fate, who was working for Senator Ted Stevens. It was love at first sight with Julie, and our great state. And, as my Marine Corps brothers know, I fight for the things I love,' Sullivan says, describing his work as state attorney general and commissioner of natural resources. "I love Alaska and America but hate what the Washington politicians are doing to our state and country.' Chris Christie's highly anticipated Illinois fundraising swing: "Christie, still dogged by the uproar over a politically motivated traffic jam ordered by his office last year, said at an event in Chicago on Tuesday that he was disappointed by the 'bad judgments' made by people on his staff. The so-called Bridgegate scandal had threatened to overshadow Christie's visit - Mayor Rahm Emanuel joked Tuesday morning that he welcomed Christie 'to the public transportation system and the roads here in the city of Chicago.' But it didn't scare off at least two of the four Republican candidates for Illinois governor. State Sen. Bill Brady attended Christie's only public event of the day, and businessman Bruce Rauner met with Christie later in the afternoon." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=68d14e6f0f13905a8679fb7160912dc1a24fcf2ff9f9209d4fb0b47b58ffee9e http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=68d14e6f0f13905a8679fb7160912dc1a24fcf2ff9f9209d4fb0b47b58ffee9e MORE-CNN looks at how Christie can use campaign funds to pay legal fees for complying with subpoenas: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=68d14e6f0f13905ac5dd00ec36fb4bca7496000edb552f106e717735ae31c1f2 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=68d14e6f0f13905ac5dd00ec36fb4bca7496000edb552f106e717735ae31c1f2 SNEAK PEEK-NRSC GOES AFTER NOW-SENATOR WALSH: Democratic Montana Lt. Gov. John Walsh was officially sworn in to replace Sen. Max Baucus on Tuesday-and he's getting a not-so-warm welcome to the race from the National Republican Senatorial Committee. In a 15-second Instagram video, the NRSC highlights the handful of sexual harassment and wrongful termination lawsuits in Montana in which Walsh was named as a defendant: "The newest U.S. Senator from Montana has been also named the defendant in multiple lawsuits," the video says. "Today's not the last time John Walsh will be sworn in this year." Walsh was named in the lawsuits, which all deal with one staffer's alleged favoritism and harassment of others at the Montana Department of Emergency Services, only in an official capacity ( http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=68d14e6f0f13905a295aa10fc05bf401c47724c2eb0ab28788a7ef6dab6fcf58 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=68d14e6f0f13905a295aa10fc05bf401c47724c2eb0ab28788a7ef6dab6fcf58 ). Wendy Davis and her team have crafted her campaign story-and the controversies that have arisen in the process: "Davis had succeeded on two levels - as a professional and as a mother of two adult daughters who seem to love and admire her - but getting to this point was probably not as simple as her campaign made it sound. Political narratives are necessarily reductive, invariably gauzy and thus often misleading. They tell two conflicting tales at the same time: I'm absolutely amazing and unique, and I'm just like you. But it seemed undeniable that female politicians were far more constrained than men in how they recounted their stories. ... [T]he reality of Davis's achievements were all around me as I drove back to my hotel, along a route that took me through her old City Council district ... Davis played a notable role in the integration of what Fort Worth had always been with what it was becoming. It struck me as a pretty good campaign theme. ... Instead, Davis had reassured voters with a near-perfect narrative: a portrait of herself as modern-day Supermom, a woman who existed only in our imaginations." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=68d14e6f0f13905ae6a67b66af4b203037a1f9f2f71368c60f78dbe45f5b03af http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=68d14e6f0f13905ae6a67b66af4b203037a1f9f2f71368c60f78dbe45f5b03af LIGHTER CLICK-PoliticsPA notes that the slogan for Democratic businessman Tom Wolf's gubernatorial campaign slogan looks a lot-or rather, exactly-like the one used by Peter Russo's character in "House of Cards": http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=9859d647b1cec1abbb8c9a554bc96438d5522a571670be83a95ca033f454052b http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=9859d647b1cec1abbb8c9a554bc96438d5522a571670be83a95ca033f454052b ACROSS THE MAP-Quick takes from races around the country: SENATE- -GA-Sen: The conservative Madison Project endorsed GOP Rep.
