NOAH FELDMAN: In Egypt, the clash between the army and the Muslim
Brotherhood is a “head-to-head confrontation between autocratic force
and popular majoritarianism. Its resolution will determine, to a great

PETER ORSZAG: Mandatory voting could help reduce political polarization
and “alter the role of money in elections. Turn-out-the-vote efforts,
often bankrolled by big-money groups, would become largely irrelevant.
Negative advertising could be less effective, because a central aim of
such ads is to discourage participation in the opponent’s camp. . . .
And it could allow the first president in history to be elected by a

MARGARET CARLSON: It can be hard living in the nation's capital.
“Washington’s tolerance for official crime doesn't help its efforts to
gain greater budget autonomy, win more voting power for the district's
delegate, or come closer to statehood. It does, however, help
contribute to the city's reputation as a laughingstock.” [Link]

CLIVE CROOK: With Europe’s political leaders paralyzed, it's up to the
European Central Bank to halt the downward spiral. “The ECB can deliver
monetary stimulus and restore confidence in the distressed governments’
solvency at a stroke, without further debate or delay, so long as it is
forceful enough. What’s stopping it?” [Link]

THE EDITORS: One simple maneuver could diminish corporations' role in
politics, improve our global competitiveness and increase wages, among
other tax miracles. Here's the deal: “Lower marginal rates, tax
long-term capital gains and dividends at the same rate as regular
income, and eliminate the corporate-income tax.” [Link] And in
Egypt, THE EDITORS write, by calling for a fresh vote, the U.S.
legitimizes the recent coup d’etat by Egyptian generals. “If the
situation continues to unravel, then the prudent next step is for the
U.S. to consider suspending the $1.3 billion in annual aid that it
gives to Egypt's military.” [Link]
