Entries into the Thompson-Ravitz (T-R) Awards competition will be accepted through 28 March. The T-Rs are one of several awards programs designed to evaluate the quality of PA/VI work across the Navy and recognize those who did it the best in 2013. You can also contact Mr. Dunne for that information at christopher.dunne@navy.mil or call him at 703-693-1363, DSN 223-1363. 2. DoD VISUAL INFORMATION AWARDS PROGRAM (VIAP). DoD’s Visual Information Awards Program is another annual competition to test just how good your VI products truly are. The program categories cover photography, videography and graphic arts. Active duty and Reserve MCs are eligible for the competition. Entries are submitted directly to DINFOS -- CHINFO doesn’t have a role. They can be the same products you submitted to the Russ Egnor Navy Media Awards, just be sure you follow the VIAP entry instructions perfectly. The VIAP Standard Operating Procedures and entry forms are available at https://viap.dinfos.dma.mil/. Deadline for submission to the VIAPs is 17 February. 3. SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY - ADVANCED NAVY VISUAL JOURNALISM PROGRAM. If you want to be on the leading edge of visual communications and have some good fundamental camera skills, now's the time to start putting your portfolio and show reels together. The annual call for applications to participate in the Advanced Navy Visual Journalism program for academic year 2014-2015 will be published soon in a Team PA and NAVADMIN. 4. DINFOS COURSES. DINFOS course schedules and Navy quotas through FY15 are on p-a-Net at https://pa-net.navy.mil/eRoom/chinfo/PANET/0_15bf11. The course schedules are also on the DINFOS web site at http://www.dinfos.dma.mil/dinfosweb/students/courseinfo/academic_main.aspx. Please review all course prerequisites before requesting a course. Inside the 45-day enrollment window, all remaining seats are filled on a first come-first served basis, so check with your detailer to see if a seat is still available. For best results, make your enrollment request six months before a course’s start date. 5. ITHACA COLLEGE CERTIFICATE PROGRAM. Ithaca College offers a series of 16-day online seminars designed for communication professionals with at least five years of experience who want to develop their management and strategy skills. Available seminars cover topics such as Crisis Communication, Strategic Planning, Project Management for Communicators and more. Free “Instagram for Government” webinar from howto.gov. Sharing video and photo content can help federal agencies as part of an overall social and mobile strategy to ensure citizens can access valuable government content anywhere, anytime, on any device. Instagram is a free online photo-sharing, video-sharing, and social networking service that allows its users to take pictures and videos, apply digital filters to them, and share them on a variety of social networking services, such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Flickr. http://www.howto.gov/training/classes/instagram-for-government 7. WORKSHOP OPPORTUNITY. 2014 Multimedia Immersion Workshop, 13-17 May, Syracuse, NY. The National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) Multimedia Immersion workshop is an intense, five-day, hands-on training workshop for visual journalists looking to expand and grow their multimedia skills using the latest technology. NPASE RELEASES 2014 EXPEDITIONARY SKILLS COURSE SCHEDULE. NPASE has made significant changes to their training courses as part of a comprehensive curriculum review. The following two-week courses are offered by NPASE East and NPASE West: Photojournalism, Print Journalism, Broadcast Production, Graphic Artist, and Public Affairs Specialist. The course descriptions, requirements and schedule are attached and also listed below: A. PHOTOJOURNALISM (ESP). This two-week practical course of instruction (10 training days) opens with a brief review of basic photojournalism before moving into the advanced material by the end of Training Day 1. The course will cover advanced lighting, environmental portraits and feature photos, illustrative photography, photo stories and essays, and advanced metadata inputs. Students will have multiple photo assignments including studio work, environmental portraits, and at least two photo stories or photo essays. Students must have a valid Vision ID before reporting to class. Students will be required to bring their own camera gear. Computer stations are provided. Students must come with a working knowledge of Photo Mechanic, Adobe PhotoShop and Adobe Bridge. NPASE East: ESP 214 - 14Apr-25Apr; ESP 314 - 14Jul-25Jul; ESP 414 - 22Sep-03Oct; ESPJ 414 - 20Oct-31Oct. NPASE West: ESP 314 - 7Jul-18Jul; ESP 414 - 13Oct-24Oct. B. BROADCAST PRODUCTION (ESB). This two-week practical course of instruction (10 training days) opens with a brief review of basic electronic news gathering before moving into the advanced material by the end of Training Day 1. Students will be tasked with editing and producing video products from provided prime cuts as well as shooting their own material. Voicing techniques and audio production will be emphasized. The students will use their material to produce an original audio story, prime cuts clip, news story and a multimedia production. Students will be trained in DSLR camera techniques as well. Students must have a valid Vision ID before reporting to class. Students will be required to bring their own ENG gear. Computer stations will be provided. Students must come with a working knowledge of Adobe Premier and Adobe Photoshop. NPASE East: ESB 114 - 18Feb-28Feb; ESB 214 - 05May-16May; ESB 314 - 28Jul-08Aug; ESB 414 - 06Oct-17Oct. NPASE West: ESB 214 - 09Jun-20Jun; ESB 314 - 08Sep-19Sep C. PRINT JOURNALISM (ESPJ). This two-week practical course of instruction (10 training days) opens with a brief review of basic print journalism before moving into the advanced material by the end of Training Day 1. The course will require students to improve their ability to write gripping, accurate leads, conduct interviews, write various types of features and improve their time-management to produce compelling stories under tight deadlines. Students will have multiple written assignments that will be heavy on feature writing. It is highly recommended students bring their own laptop so they can work after hours without relying on MWR or other computer labs. This two-week practical course of instruction (10 training days) opens with a brief review of basic design and layout principles before moving into the advanced material by the end of Training Day 1. Students will learn to integrate graphics with various media resources available including social media, websites, print and video outlets. Students will produce command information/campaign graphics, newsletter layouts, concept and data-based infographics. Students must have a working knowledge of Adobe PhotoShop, InDesign, Illustrator and Premier, as well as a working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint. NPASE East: ESG 114 - 17Mar-28Mar; ESG 214 - 02Jun-13Jun; ESG 314 - 25Aug-05Sep; ESG 414 - 03Nov-14Nov. NPASE West: ESG 314 - 28Jul-08Aug; ESG 414 - 03Nov-14Nov. E. PUBLIC AFFAIRS SPECIALIST (ESPA). This two-week practical course of instruction (10 training days) takes students through a simulated deployment. Students will be required to develop and produce PA plans, talking points, releases, contingency statements, as well as allocate intelligence-gathering resources. At the conclusion of this course, students will be equipped to deploy independently as the Public Affairs Officer and provide the commanding officer with planning and media products telling the story of the ship or deployed unit.
