MICHAEL KINSLEY: What should we think about government leaks? Either
reporters are right to expose secret government goings-on, or they’re
wrong to supply information to enemies. “There is no ‘invisible hand’
to guarantee that if the government tries to keep its secrets and
reporters try to pry them away, the result will be the ideal balance
between the people's right to know and the government's need for them

public from learning anything useful from political news conferences.
When journalists dumb down the message, we "reduce the amount of useful

THE EDITORS: The Fed today stepped in to provide more monetary stimulus
“largely because Congress won't. . . . Lawmakers should do their part
by agreeing to a compromise budget that allows for immediate economic
growth and a more sustainable future.” [Link] And, THE EDITORS
write, Attorney General Eric Holder should turn over the Justice
Department documents on Operation Fast and Furious. “The only way to
salvage something positive from this fiasco is to investigate what went
