___________________________________ Dear Hunter, I returned to work at Save the Children last week, after an exhilarating three-week national book tour. I am thrilled that “A Good Man: Rediscovering My Father, Sargent Shriver (http://e2.ma/click/lgnsb/h9ytd/du8b1)” made both The New York Times and The Washington Post bestsellers lists but, more importantly, I am humbled by the outpouring of support I received from friends around the country. I especially appreciate the kind comments about my dad. As Independence Day approaches, I have been thinking about the words Dad spoke when he withdrew from the presidential race in 1976: “Democracy after all is a high-risk undertaking. It means trusting the people rather than the experts; but it also means educating the people, challenging the people, inspiring the people. It means stimulating the people to think, to criticize, to question.” Undoubtedly, we all agree that democracy is a risk worth taking. This is the greatest country in the history of the world. I am confident that by educating, challenging, and inspiring, by thinking, criticizing, and questioning, we can tackle the biggest crisis facing us today: childhood poverty. Nearly 1 in 4 children in America lives in poverty. That is simply unacceptable and we can do better. I appreciate your ongoing support of Save the Children’s work in the United States. Thanks to you, we are serving more children in need than ever before, and early indications are that the results for our early childhood development and school-aged literacy programs are very strong. We could not do this without your assistance and I look forward to sharing the full results with you in the fall. Best wishes for a safe and happy Fourth of July, filled with friends and family and lots of love and laughter. Hope to see you soon.
