MICHAEL KINSLEY: A new report on the massive loss in U.S. household
wealth between 2007 and 2010 brings to mind my favorite economist.
Henry George was "as concerned about income equality as the most
bleeding-heart liberal and as concerned about economic growth as the

EZRA KLEIN: Thirty-nine percent of Harvard's 2010 class and 34 percent
of Columbia's headed to a job in finance or management consulting.
"Nothing against finance or management consulting. But do they really
need such a big chunk of our best and brightest?" The startup Venture

CAROLINE BAUM: "I suspect we are two events away from a 1 percent yield
on the 10-year note and a flatter curve. All it would take is another
weak employment report and a Greek exit from the euro zone to send
investors rushing for the safety and security of U.S. Treasuries."

AMAR BHIDE and CHRIS PAPAGIANIS: Pairing reforms on money-market mutual
funds "with a creative alternative to the current model could make the
demise of money funds palatable even to their sponsors. We propose
extending a government program called TreasuryDirect, which allows
investors to buy Treasury securities directly from the government in
accounts held with the Treasury Department." [Link]

JONATHAN REISS: Regional Federal Reserve boards need reform. At the New
York Fed, for example, "none of the current directors is entirely
independent, not even the six who by law should represent the public."

THE EDITORS: How much natural gas escapes into the air? As the U.S.
gears up to use more of it, "not only for electricity and home heating
but also to power cars and trucks and for export, the need to find out
how much is getting away is urgent." [Link] Meanwhile, THE EDITORS
write, "according to Hillary Clinton, a delivery of helicopter gunships
is on its way from Russia to President Bashar Al-Assad in Syria. If so,
any prospect of a managed end to the bloodshed there is dwindling fast,
and Russia will bear responsibility." [Link]
