Joe Biden’s Corvette bummer

Perhaps the only thing standing in the way between Joe Biden and a 2016 run for the White House: a shiny, new Corvette.

The vice president’s love affair with fast cars was evident Wednesday, with Biden going gaga over the sleek 2015 Corvette Stingray Z06 Supercar.

“There’s a lot of reasons to run for president, but there’s one overwhelming reason not to run for president,” Biden said at the United Auto Workers’ annual legislative conference in Washington. “I’d like to get that Z06 with zero to 60 in 3.4 seconds. Three point four seconds.”

Vice presidents, presidents and most candidates for the top political office aren’t allowed to drive themselves, and Biden has been yearning to get back behind the wheel when his second term as vice president ends in early 2017.
Biden, the proud owner of a restored 1967 Corvette, seemed to feel right at home with this muscle-car crowd. “You tack that sucker up to six grand and this comes out of the hole like a bullet, man,” Biden said of the new Stingray.

His own ’67 is just a “quarter horse, man. That’s all it is, a quarter horse,” Biden said. “But that new Stingray, yoooo. Oh, oh, oh. It’s more than a quarter horse, even though it goes zero to 60 in [3.4] seconds — not that I like speed.

“It also can track on a curve. It has a 106.7-inch wheelbase. It has more weight in the back for the first time ever,” he continued. “And I can hardly wait, if I were not in this job, to take on my friend’s Porsche. I’m serious, it’s the best buy in America.”

Last month at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Biden and GM’s Chief Executive Mary Barra discussed the possibility of him taking the new Corvette for a spin, possibly at a Secret Service facility.

“I may ask,” Biden told the UAW.

All of Biden’s oohing and ahhing over the Z06 evoked another — albeit fictional — account of Biden’s automotive obsession: A story in the satirical news outlet The Onion about a shirtless Biden washing his 1981 Trans Am in the White House driveway.

“This baby just needs a little scrub down,” Biden is quoted as saying in the Onion parody. “Gotta get her looking good so I can impress the chicks when I’m cruising down Pennsylvania [Avenue].”
