Dear Hunter,

You will find it in every neighborhood, county and state. It hits the poor, middle-class and upper-class. It is blind to race, ethnicity, nationality or gender identity or preference; it's opioid abuse and it doesn't discriminate.

With the number of fatal opioid overdoses up 50% from last year alone, we need to aggressively find solutions to this tragic issue. This is an addiction that has reached epidemic proportions in our country. In 2014, the number of deaths from opioid overdoses in the United States topped 18,000, about 50 a day—more than three times the number in 2001. This epidemic is ravaging our communities and we must work hard to find a solution before it's too late.

The opening of the new drug treatment center in Crownsville is a great step towards achieving this goal. Currently, the treatment center has 42 residents, which is slightly less than half of it's capacity. The addiction counselors are working hard to help their patients fight addiction and live a normal life again.

In Congress, I will fight to bring home more federal dollars to help Crownsville and other treatment centers battle the opioid epidemic. This is a fast-growing problem facing our communities, and one that our government must help fight so our families and communities remain strong.
