Today, the Wall Street Journal’s Alastair Gale published an exclusive (http://on.wsj.com/2bmIocb) about Beyond Parallel’s latest finding: The annual U.S.-South Korean military exercises do not provoke North Korea and its dictator Kim Jong Un to launch missile tests as previously assumed. Dive Deeper: For more CSIS analysis on Korea visit Beyond Parallel’s website (http://beyondparallel.csis.org/us-rok-exercises-not-provoke-dprk/) . ** Withdrawal ------------------------------------------------------------ The U.S. military has withdrawn from Saudi Arabia its personnel who were coordinating with the Saudi-led air campaign in Yemen, and sharply reduced the number of staff elsewhere who were assisting in that planning, U.S. officials told Reuters’s Phil Stewart in an exclusive (http://www.reuters.com/article/us-yemen-security-usa-saudiarabia-idUSKCN10U1TL?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=Social) . Dive Deeper: CSIS’s Anthony Cordesman authored a new commentary this week, "U.S. Wars in Iraq, Syria, Libya and Yemen: What Are The Endstates? (https://www.csis.org/analysis/us-wars-iraq-syria-libya-and-yemen-what-are-endstates?block4) " ** Zika Spreading in Miami Beach ------------------------------------------------------------ Florida Gov. Rick Scott confirmed today that the Zika virus is being spread locally by mosquitoes in Miami Beach, a development that marks an expansion of the outbreak in South Florida and immediately prompted a new travel advisory by federal officials. Dive Deeper: CSIS's Steve Morrison writes that there are four fundamental reasons why the US is failing on Zika in a new commentary (http://cs.is/failingzika) this week. ** In That Number ------------------------------------------------------------ ** 4.4 million ------------------------------------------------------------ People affected by malnutrition in northeastern Nigeria due to years of terror by Boko Haram. Source: Los Angeles Times (http://www.latimes.com/world/africa/la-fg-nigeria-bokoharam-starvation-20160810-snap-story.html) . ** Critical Quote ------------------------------------------------------------ ** “In hindsight, the past five years’ experience has demonstrated that while a $120/barrel price was unsustainable, a $27 floor would be equally transitory.” ------------------------------------------------------------ — CSIS Commentary, “Oil Price Movements in Perspective (https://www.csis.org/analysis/oil-price-movements-perspective) .” ** One to Watch ------------------------------------------------------------ (Photo Credit: Twitter.) Katrina Timlin (https://www.csis.org/people/katrina-timlin) (@kattoo11 (https://twitter.com/kattoo11) ) is an associate fellow in CSIS’s Strategic Technologies program. She published a really cool blog post (https://www.csis.org/blogs/strategic-technologies-blog/china%E2%80%99s-quess-what-you-should-know-about-china%E2%80%99s-quantum) on China’s first quantum communications satellite. ** Optics ------------------------------------------------------------ (Photo Credit: Carl Court/Getty Images) The Red Arrows aerobatics display team perform during the Bournemouth Air Festival in Bournemouth, England. ** Highly Recommended ------------------------------------------------------------ The Economist (http://www.economist.com/news/europe/21705361-desk-shuffles-kremlin-signal-something-no-one-knows-what-dancing-dark) explains Putin’s personnel moves. ** CSIS Next Week ------------------------------------------------------------ Join CSIS’s International Security Program on Thursday, August 25 at 10:00 a.m. for “Innovation in the Defense Department with General Paul Selva. In this episode, Dr. Brzezinski discusses recent developments in Russian foreign policy and the implications for Europe. ** I Like It Like That ------------------------------------------------------------ “There is no ‘technology industry’ (https://medium.com/humane-tech/there-is-no-technology-industry-44774dfb3ed7#.m54tqq4e3) ” by Anil Dash. ** Smiles ------------------------------------------------------------ Certain bands, for some reason, are like you’re favorite pair of sneakers—you just keep going back to them! I have a handful of artists like this and I bet you do too. Little Feat are at the very top of my broken-in sneaker list. Maybe that’s because the classic lineup of Feat featuring Lowell George and Paul Barrere was locked in step. This performance of “Dixie Chicken (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FekVR_SC5M) ” in 1977 shows off the chemistry of George and Barrere, who first met at Hollywood High School in LA. Here, on stage in London’s Rainbow Theatre, they are locked in the pocket of a sumptuous groove with their extraordinary rhythm section. Little Feat moments like this keep me smiling and coming back. ** Feedback ------------------------------------------------------------ I always welcome and benefit from your feedback.
