08/09/2016 07:57 AM EDT By Heather Caygle (hcaygle@politico.com or @heatherscope) With assistance from Daniel Lippman FRESH THIS MORNING: OUT ON THE TRAIL- Sen. Tim Kaine and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence have been settling into their new jobs as presidential running mates for less than a month now but it's already clear the two gigs couldn't be more different. Kaine has it easier, serving as a "down-home articulator of long-held Democratic policy values," write Burgess Everett and Matthew Nussbaum, a position he's comfortable with given the many hats he's worn in Democratic politics over the years. Pence, meanwhile, is on clean-up duty, straining to hold Republicans together as he smooths over Donald Trump's latest controversies. A tale of two pols: "In separate visits to Wisconsin in recent days, their disparate roles were on full display. Against the backdrop of a gentrifying riverfront neighborhood in Milwaukee, Kaine played the traditional running mate's role, dinging Trump repeatedly as an enemy of the working class and casting Clinton as an economic savior. ...Two hours up the road, Pence put the finishing touches on his latest rebuilding project: The poor relations between House Speaker Paul Ryan and Trump." This week: Pence is barnstorming Iowa, Ohio and Pennsylvania to gin up support among working class voters. Kaine will be in the deep south, fundraising in Louisiana and Texas before heading up to New York and New Hampshire. Other notable races include the elections to replace retiring Reps. John Kline in Minnesota and Reid Ribble in Wisconsin. Susan Collins has hinted for months that she isn't too keen on Donald Trump but the moderate Mainer made it clear in an op-ed Monday night, saying she's not voting for him in November. "This is not a decision I make lightly, for I am a lifelong Republican. But Donald Trump does not reflect historical Republican values nor the inclusive approach to governing that is critical to healing the divisions in our country," she wrote in the Washington Post. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=a0e5c0545c8ba3214f8ea11be4fac5d6e08bd5497ec5daa2f244f502c9ed4a6f WE'RE TAKING TUESDAY BY STORM. Welcome to August 9. You're reading POLITICO's Huddle, the play-by-play guide to all things Capitol Hill. Over here in Huddeland, we're happy to take a break from the daily congressional digest and root on the U.S. in the Olympics, especially tell-it-like-it-is swimmer Lilly King, who won gold in the breaststroke Monday. "It's incredible - winning the gold medal and knowing I did it clean," said King, 19, according to the Washington Post. AROUND THE HILL- Mood music: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=a0e5c0545c8ba3215763dacabc3e24a27cb4af6a1989feade6d0bd09a3af6dc2 McCAUL FOR SENATE? Critics of Sen. Ted Cruz have been looking for a primary challenger to take on the Texas firebrand in 2018, especially after his controversial speech during the GOP convention. Turns out some GOP donors and Lone Star State lawmakers are quietly nudging Rep. Mike McCaul in that direction, report CNN's Manu Raju and Theodore Schleifer. "McCaul, a six-term congressman who chairs the House Homeland Security Committee, has not yet deliberated on the matter but has yet to rule out a potential Senate run, according to one source close to his House reelection campaign." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=a0e5c0545c8ba321a9a24366f3e8a6f8f1a357eab1777ff9513797ce6f7789d2 WASSERMAN SCHULTZ CHALLENGER FILES FEC COMPLAINT-Tim Canova, the Democratic law professor who is challenging Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, has filed a complaint with the FEC alleging the former DNC head used her position to "improperly benefit her congressional campaign," reports the Hill's Jesse Byrnes. "Two factors make me suspect that even if Clinton wins by a much larger margin than, say, Obama's win over Romney four years ago, I don't think the down-ballot implications would be that huge. In the House, there are fewer competitive district than at any point in our lifetime... In the Senate, the GOP majority is absolutely on the line; my guess it will end up 50-50, give or take a seat or two, but given voters' doubts about Clinton, the 'don't give Hillary Clinton a blank check' argument may well be a politically potent one." Mike Honda are helping him defend against it," reports Sarah Wire for the L.A. Times. "Three donors who recently contributed to the Silicon Valley congressman's legal defense were Dr. Ngai Nguyen of San Jose, who gave $5,000; attorney Sukhan Kim, who also gave $5,000; and Dr. Gloria Wu of San Jose, who gave $1,000. Their names also appear on a donor list that is part of an ongoing ethics investigation of Honda." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=a0e5c0545c8ba3215cbce5cb1085c1219abfcbad877805c23ba5607afdd60533 IOWA STAR POWER COMES OUT FOR PENCE- Sen. Joni Ernst and Rep. Steve King joined Pence out on the trail Monday as he campaigned for Trump in Iowa. In Sioux City, "King, a conservative firebrand who has represented his Iowa district in the House since 2003, introduced Pence with glowing praise for the Trump-Pence ticket. King had previously been a die-hard supporter of Cruz," reports Matthew Nussbaum. Later in Council Bluffs, Ernst focused more on economic issues when making the case for Trump. "'We need growth, we need jobs, we need to keep it here in the United States, that's what Donald Trump will do,' the freshman senator said." Bob Dold, both endangered Illinois Republicans, "will buck their party's platform on immigration Wednesday as they highlight their support for a pathway to citizenship for many of the nation's 11 million undocumented immigrants," reports Erin Kelly for USA Today. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=a0e5c0545c8ba3215d28c955146da785ecc5345fad5432b59b0b55ab3d9f7f73 TODAY IN LONGSHOT NEWS-Evan McMullin, former policy director for the House Republican Conference, announced plans Monday for a longshot bid for the White House. "[S]ources close to McMullin - a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and alum of Brigham Young University - said he planned to aggressively contest Utah and other Mormon-heavy states. Polls have shown reliably Republican Mormon voters are deeply averse to Trump's candidacy," reports BuzzFeed's McKay Coppins. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=a0e5c0545c8ba3210df7d1b0c0bdbd8e6810159c20b7e6bd0a141d3a9c00627a HRC weighs in: "The House Republican Conference has zero knowledge of his intentions," said spokesman Nate Hodson.
