BBC (http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-37116349) identified the five-year-old as Omran Daqneesh, who was treated for head wounds on Wednesday. Dive Deeper: CSIS’s Anthony Cordesman authored a new commentary this week, "US Wars in Iraq, Syria, Libya and Yemen: What Are The Endstates? (https://www.csis.org/analysis/us-wars-iraq-syria-libya-and-yemen-what-are-endstates) " And, the Institute for the Study of War has published its latest “Syria Situation Report (http://www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/syria-situation-report-august-12-18-2016) .” ** Attacks in Turkey ------------------------------------------------------------ Turkish president Erdogan today accused followers of a US-based Islamic cleric he blames for last month's coup attempt of being complicit in attacks by Kurdish militants in Turkey's southeast which killed 10 people, as Reuters reports (http://www.reuters.com/article/us-turkey-security-blast-idUSKCN10T0LA) . ** $50 a Barrel ------------------------------------------------------------ A rally that pushed international crude-oil prices above $50 a barrel today is a welcome sign for many energy companies, but not enough to kick-start an industry in the midst of a two-year slump, executives said, as the Wall Street Journal’s Sarah Kent, Selina Williams and Erin Ailworth report (http://www.wsj.com/articles/oil-companies-need-prices-to-keep-rising-past-50-a-barrel-1471543357) . Dive Deeper: CSIS’s Frank Verrastro, Guy Caruso, Kevin Book and Larry Goldstein today authored a new commentary, "Oil Price Movements in Perspective: Reading the Charts, Interpreting the Tea Leaves, Ridding the Roller Coaster and (Maybe?) Learning Past Lessons (https://www.csis.org/analysis/oil-price-movements-perspective) ." ** In That Number ------------------------------------------------------------ ** 60 ------------------------------------------------------------ Percentage of data centers the Pentagon wants to close by FY 2018. Source: the Hill (http://thehill.com/policy/defense/291873-pentagon-to-establish-data-center-closure-team) . ** Critical Quote ------------------------------------------------------------ ** “The embassy in London is reserved only for some of the foreign ministry's top official. In this regard, Thae's defection represents the flight of some of the North's best and brightest—their diplomatic cream of the crop.” ------------------------------------------------------------ —CSIS’s Victor Cha on the defection of a DPRK diplomat. Source: Daily Mail (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3746747/N-Korea-defector-trusted-elite.html) . ** One to Watch ------------------------------------------------------------ (Photo Credit: Hürriyet.) Arda Akin is a reporter with the Turkish newspaper Hürriyet. Arda was recently arrested (http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/daily-hurriyet-reporter-arrested-over-failed-coup-probe.aspx?pageID=238&nID=102882&NewsCatID=341) for “knowingly and willfully helping the Fetullahist Terror Organization (FETÖ)” as a result of articles he wrote and tweets he posted about the failed coup attempt. ** Optics ------------------------------------------------------------ (Photo Credit: Rolex Dela Pena - Pool/Getty Images) Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi (L) and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang (R) talk during a signing of agreements ceremony at the Great Hall of the People today in Beijing. So does “Live From Daryl’s House.” Thanks to all of you who have sent me notes the last few days asking when our road trip up to Daryl’s House is going to occur. Believe me, I’m working on it! Smokey Robinson first recorded “Going to a Go-Go” in 1965 with The Miracles for Motown’s Tamla label—it was the Miracles’ fifth million-selling record and became part of America’s dance and club culture for all-time. The Rolling Stones covered the song in ’82 but their version (while popular) never contained the magic captured by Smokey and The Miracles and the backing Motown house band, The Funk Brothers. But capturing magical musical moments is a matter of routine at Daryl’s House, and when legendary musicians like Smokey show up, all the ingredients are in place for something brilliant to come together (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0cCDoqxDDg) . ** Feedback ------------------------------------------------------------ I always welcome and benefit from your feedback.
