And North Korea has threatened nuclear retaliation for a joint US-South Korea military drill in a statement from the country’s Foreign Ministry, via state news agency KCNA (http://www.newsweek.com/north-korea-threaten-us-and-south-korea-nuclear-strike-492347) . Dive Deeper: For in-depth analysis on North and South Korea, visit the CSIS interactive micro-website “Beyond Parallel (http://beyondparallel.csis.org/us-rok-exercises-not-provoke-dprk/) .” ** Just Showing Off ------------------------------------------------------------ A military alliance between Tehran and Moscow showed signs of strain as newly launched Russian bombing missions to Syria from an Iranian air base came to a quick end and Iran’s defense minister accused Russia of “showing off,” as the Wall Street Journal’s Asa Fitch reports (http://www.wsj.com/articles/russian-raids-from-iranian-air-base-finished-for-now-tehran-says-1471861287) . And, as the Washington Post’s Andrew Roth reports (https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/tensions-mount-between-russia-and-ukraine-following-terror-incident/2016/08/21/33490f2c-658c-11e6-b4d8-33e931b5a26d_story.html) , tensions are mounting between Russia and Ukraine ahead of Russia’s planned September military exercises. Dive Deeper: CSIS visiting fellow Igor Zevelev authored a commentary today: “The Russian World in Moscow’s Strategy (https://www.csis.org/analysis/russian-world-moscows-strategy) .” ** Turkish Tragedy ------------------------------------------------------------ Prime Minister Binali Yildirim of Turkey said today that authorities do not know if a suicide bomber who attacked a Kurdish wedding on Saturday killing 54 people was a child. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said after Saturday’s attack in Gazantiep that the bomber was 12-14 years old, as the BBC reports (http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-37158615) . ** New CSIS Posting ------------------------------------------------------------ CSIS’s Mark Cancian has a new article on Defense360: “Lengthening the Tenure of the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (http://defense360.csis.org/lengthening-tenure-chairman-vice-chairman/) ." ** In That Number ------------------------------------------------------------ ** 75,000 ------------------------------------------------------------ Number of US and South Korean forces conducting annual military drills that began today. The Wall Street Journal’s Jay Solomon (@WSJSoloman (https://twitter.com/WSJSolomon) ) has a new book, The Iran Wars: Spy Games, Bank Battles, and the Secret Deals that Reshaped the Middle East, which has already broken news and is making waves. CSIS will be hosting the book’s Washington launch on August 30. ** Optics ------------------------------------------------------------ (Photo Credit: Philippe Lopez/AFP/Getty Images.) I’ve mostly been doing this because I can’t find a lot of new music that sounds good to me. Meanwhile, it’s fun to revisit those classic sounds that are embedded deep. The classic rock group Chicago has one of those sounds that is unforgettable. I’m not the only one who thinks this—they’ve sold over 100 million records and are second only to the Beach Boys in Billboard singles and album chart success among US bands. Last April, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, deservedly so. My favorite Chicago song is a rousing tune I grew up with, “Feeling Stronger Every Day (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-wHixgp2RE) .” They recorded it in 1973 but it’s timeless. It’s the horns, those horns! Long before I knew the Rolling Stones used horns to make their music swagger or that Jazz was born in the Crescent City, I knew about Chicago’s horns and this infectious track. ** Feedback ------------------------------------------------------------ I always welcome and benefit from your feedback.
